Kahiusa sa Kalikopan: From Seed to Shade – Activity Design (Revised, No Transition Section)
I. Overview:
This 8-hour program on October 6th, 2024, for 120 DDOSP-SID scholars focuses on
environmental responsibility through a hands-on tree planting experience at the GK Berjaya
Municipal Arboretum in Monkayo, Davao de Oro. Scholars, divided into five teams with
designated team leaders, will plant 150 seedlings representing six native tree species (Dita, Dao,
Ipil, Kalantas, Aguho, Kamagong). Each team will plant 25 trees, with the remaining 25 planted
by program officers. The 30-minute walk from the Municipal Plaza to the Arboretum is
incorporated into the schedule. Each scholar is responsible for bringing their own lunch and
planting tools. Close collaboration with the MENRO (Municipal Environment and Natural
Resources Office) is crucial.

NARRATIVE REPORT
“Kahiusa sa Kalikopan: From Seed to Shade- GK Berjaya Municipal Arboretum”
October 6, 2024 @ GK Berjaya Municipal Arboretum, Monkayo, Davao de Oro
The "Kahiusa sa Kalikopan: From Seed to Shade, Planting & Nurturing a Greener Future" project
is an 8-hour event focusing on environmental responsibility through tree planting. It aims to teach
scholars about the importance of caring for the environment while providing them hands-on
experience in planting trees. The target audience is 120 scholars from the DDOSP-SID program.
The project will take place on October 6th, 2024, at the GK Berjaya Municipal Arboretum in
Monkayo, Davao de Oro, where 150 seedlings of six native tree species will be planted.
The project was carried out through careful planning and execution. Scholars were divided into
five teams, each with a leader. The day started early, with scholars arriving at the Municipal Plaza
to check their planting tools before walking to the Arboretum. After a briefing, we received
instructions on planting techniques and learned about the tree species they would be planting.
The teams worked together to plant their assigned seedlings while receiving supervision and
support. They attended a workshop on how to care for the trees after planting. After a lunch break,
scholars participated in a guided tour of the Arboretum to learn more about biodiversity and
conservation.
Facilitating scholars is one of the challenges we face. The Monkayo Chapter has not experienced
a significant increase in the number of scholars, which has resulted in leadership challenges.
Additionally, one obstacle is that the Arboretum is located about 5-6 kilometers away from the
starting point at Monkayo Plaza, making it a substantial distance for participants to travel.
However, the implementation was smooth due to proper communication and guidance from
program officers and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
The project successfully planted 150 seedlings, contributing to Monkayo's greening efforts.
Scholars gained valuable experience in tree planting, teamwork, and environmental awareness.
The program fostered a strong connection between participants and the environment, encouraging
long-term commitment to nurturing nature. For future efforts, we recommend continued
partnerships with local organizations and more follow-up activities to maintain the planted trees.
