Engineering Ethics - Course Overview

202501 - NTS4010

Azam Nurullaev

Course Description
In this course we will explore the ethical responsibilities of engineers in professional practice.
We will also examine ethical theories, decision-making frameworks, and real-world case studies
to help students navigate ethical dilemmas in engineering. Topics include professional
responsibility, safety and risk management, environmental ethics, corporate social responsibility,
intellectual property, and the impact of emerging technologies on society. Through discussions,
case analyses, and ethical reasoning exercises, students will develop the skills to make informed
and ethical engineering decisions that align with professional codes of conduct and societal
values.

Course Objective
 Understand Ethical Principles – Explain fundamental ethical theories and their application
in engineering decision-making.
 Apply Professional Codes of Ethics – Interpret and apply ethical guidelines from
professional engineering organizations (e.g., IEEE, NSPE).
 Analyze Ethical Dilemmas – Evaluate real-world engineering cases involving ethical
conflicts and propose appropriate solutions.
 Recognize Professional Responsibility – Understand the engineer’s duty to society, clients,
and employers, including honesty, integrity, and accountability.
 Assess Safety and Risk Management – Identify ethical issues related to public safety, risk
assessment, and product liability.
 Explore Environmental and Social Responsibility – Examine the ethical implications of
engineering projects on the environment and society.
 Understand Intellectual Property Rights – Discuss ethical considerations related to
patents, copyrights, and plagiarism in engineering.
 Address Emerging Technologies Ethically – Analyze the ethical impact of AI,
biotechnology, automation, and other emerging technologies.
 Develop Ethical Decision-Making Skills – Use ethical reasoning frameworks to justify
decisions in complex engineering scenarios.
 Enhance Communication on Ethical Issues – Articulate ethical concerns clearly and
persuasively in written and oral discussions.

Student Learn Outcomes (SLOs) for Engineering Ethics

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate Ethical Awareness – Identify and explain key ethical issues in engineering

practice.
2. Apply Ethical Frameworks – Use ethical theories and professional codes to analyze and

resolve engineering dilemmas.

3. Make Informed Decisions – Evaluate the consequences of engineering decisions and justify

ethical choices using logical reasoning.

4. Recognize Professional and Social Responsibilities – Assess the impact of engineering

projects on society, the environment, and public safety.

5. Communicate Ethical Considerations – Clearly present ethical arguments in discussions,

reports, and presentations.
