WRITING TASK 2

Homework
I. INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH
1. Sample from examiners
 Genetic engineering is an important issue in society today. Some people think that it will improve people’s
lives in many ways. Others feel that it may be a threat to life on earth. Discuss both these views and give
your own opinion.
=> It is true that genetic engineering is a key area of modern scientific research, with broad implications for all
human societies. While I accept that this field of technology may have its dangers, I believe that the benefits of
genetic engineering outweigh the drawbacks.
 Some people believe that developments in the field of artificial intelligence will have a positive impact on
our lives in the near future. Others, by contrast, are worried that we are not prepared for a world in which
computers are more intelligent than humans. Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.
=> People seem to be either excited or worried about the future impact of artificial intelligence. Personally, I
can understand the two opposing points of view; I am both fascinated by developments in artificial intelligence
and apprehensive about its possible negative effects.
 Some people regard video games as harmless fun, or even as a useful educational tool. Others,
however, believe that video games are having an adverse effect on the people who play them. In
your opinion, do the drawbacks of video games outweigh the benefits?
=> Many people, and children in particular, enjoy playing computer games. While I accept that these
games can sometimes have a positive effect on the user, I believe that they are more likely to have a
harmful impact.

TOPIC 2:
In some countries, governments are encouraging industries and businesses to move to regional areas outside
the big cities. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
In recent years, there have been a lot of new factories constructed in the outskirts of the big cities,
which is suggested by officials in many nations. While some people argue that moving  relocating
industries and business to the outside of the city out-of-town areas could bring about several negative
effects, I suppose that its benefits are more significant than the drawbacks.

TOPIC 3:
At the present time, the population of some countries includes a relatively large number of young adults,
compared with the number of older people. Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages?
Over the past few years, the number of young citizens in many countries has increased notably and
gradually outweighed outnumbered the figure for the old. Although some people think that the
dominance of young adults in the population is bringing several negative consequences, I suppose that
this trend does more good than harm.

It is true that young adults represent/ occupy a higher percentage of the population in some countries.

TOPIC 4:
In many cities the use of video cameras in public places is being increased in order to reduce crime, but some
people believe that these measures restrict our individual freedom. Do the benefits of increased security
outweigh the drawbacks?
In recent years, many video cameras have been used/ installed in public places to keep track of/ trace
illegal behaviours/ criminal activities. While some people argue that the citizens’ freedom can be limited
by these solutions, I believe that its benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

In recent years, setting up cameras in public spaces for supervising illegal behaviours/ criminal activities
has become increasingly popular. While a group of people argue that this method could help to prevent
people from committing illegal actions, I suppose that the disadvantages outweigh the advantage
because of its unacceptable influence on people’s freedom.

It is true that governments are using multiple cameras to prevent/ deter/ trace criminal acts. While a
large number of people argue that excessive use of cameras restricts our privacy, I believe that the
benefits are more considerable than the drawbacks.

Dang: It is true that video cameras are being installed in many public places to prevent illegal actions.
Although some people argue that this method could trespass/ violate/ invade personal privacy, I believe
that the benefits are more considerable than the drawbacks.

In recent years, an increasing number of cameras have been being installed in every corner of cities to
lower crime rates. While video surveillance is useful to protect people from crimes, I believe this trend
does more harm than good.

… cameras installed by local authorities have become ubiquitous everywhere in cities in order to deal
with increasing numbers of crimes. …

In recent years, many cities and residences have improved their security system by utilizing cameras to
prevent criminal activities. While many citizens argue that … interfere with their freedom, I believe that
the benefits are more significant than the adverse effects.

In recent decades, many closed-circuit television systems have been widely installed for the purpose of
reducing crimes in urban regions. While some people think that this trend could infringe on/ violate/
intrude on/ invade residents' freedom, I believe that the advantages are greater than the disadvantages.

Over the past decade, many cities have been using surveillance cameras in order to prevent criminals
from committing illegal actions. While some people argue that this system could lead to unexpected
consequences, I still believe the benefits are more considerable than the drawbacks.

TOPIC 5:
In many countries nowadays, young single people no longer stay with their parents until they are married but
leave to study or work somewhere else. Do you think this trend has more advantages or disadvantages?
In recent years, the development of society has allowed many YOUNG, UNMARRIED people moving to
other places to study, work and live without their parents. Although some people think that living far
from your family could bring several potential difficulties, I believe that its benefits are more
considerable than the drawbacks.

In recent years, the younger generations are more interested in leaving their hometown or country to
accomplish/ pursue their academic and career goals. While some people argue that this situation could
bring about some disadvantages for society and family, I believe that the benefits of this situation
outweigh its drawbacks.

In recent decades, the young generation prefer leaving their parents’ house before marriage in order to
study or work in another city. While some people argue that this trend can have harmful consequences,
I believe that the benefits are outweighed by the drawbacks.

TOPIC 6:
In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and
starting university studies. Do you think this trend has more advantages or disadvantages?
In recent years, many high school graduates have chosen to take a gap year before going to/ starting
their university life to gain more experiences. While some people suppose that this choice may bring a
lot of risks, I believe that the drawbacks are outweighed by numerous benefits.

In recent years, it is believed/ encouraged that the young generation should take a gap year before they

adults, compared with the number of older people. Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the
disadvantages?
Body 1: On one hand, there are several adverse effects of the superiority of young adults in the
population of one country.
Body 2: On the other hand, the benefits of a rejuvenating population are obvious.
On the other hand, having a young population COULD bring a wide range of benefits for the society in
many aspects.

Body 2: On the other hand, I am in favor of the idea that video surveillance brings about many positive
outcomes to the society.
On the other hand, I would argue that using cameras also has its downsides.

TOPIC 5:
In many countries nowadays, young single people no longer stay with their parents until they are
married but leave to study or work somewhere else. Do you think this trend has more advantages or
disadvantages?
Body 1: On one hand, there are several reasons why the young generation should not move out and
stand on their own feet. (ko hay, ko hợp lý)

On the other hand, I suppose that this trend might bring about several certain drawbacks.

On one hand, there are several reasons why young people should stay with their families until they are
ready to start their own family.

Body 2: On the other hand, youngsters who are individually responsible for their own life could be more
mature than others. (quá chi tiết)

On one hand, young unmarried people could gain a lot of significant merits when staying far from their
familiy for work or study.

On the other hand, despite some benefits mentioned above, I suppose that this trend brings obvious
disadvantages.

Body 1: Advantages of living far from home

- More mature/ independent
- Better opportunities to develop
On one hand, there are several reasons why living far from home could be a good option for
youngsters. First, people who are standing on their own feet might be more mature than others
of the same age. The explanation for this is that they will have to overcome more obstacles,
more failures  chưa rõ ràng khó khăn gì, còn chung chung, therefore not only do they have
more experiences and lessons about life but their thoughts also become more grown-up  lặp
lại mature. Second, moving out means having better opportunities to develop. These people 

người, nhiều công việc hơn. In addition  chỉ dùng khi chuyển luận điểm, they could even find
out their real capability and then focus on how to solidify it.
DRAFT 2: On one hand, there are several reasons why living far from home could be a good
option for youngsters. First, people who are standing on their own feet might be more mature
than others of the same age. Unlike their peers who are under control of parents, they have to
take care of themselves, learn how to cook and reasonably manage their study, time and
money. Too many pressures and burdens might lead to failures, however, they could learn a lot
about life from these. Second, moving to a more developed city or country means having
better opportunities to develop a higher chance to fulfill their dreams.
This is due to better facilities in town, such as cutting-edge education or higher salary in bigger
companies, which they could not experience in rural areas. Ôm đồm, nhiều ý không kết nối
 This is due to the fact that big cities offer better job opportunities than rural areas;
therefore young adults can earn a higher salary and enjoy better quality of life.

Body 2: Disadvantages of living far from home
- Neglect their study
- Health problems
On the other hand, despite some benefits mentioned above, I believe that this tendency could
bring about certain disadvantages. Firstly/The most obvious cause is that …, living alone could
lead to negligence in study. When choosing to live independently, many people might feel
overwhelmed due to burden of finance, household chores and so on. Thus, study becomes hard
to focus on when spending time for it seems to be limited. Secondly, the stress of tackling life’s
problems could affect their health. Whether they want to take care of themselves or not, they
sometimes even have to neglect their tiredness and keep minding their work because of bunch
of tasks and deadlines. Therefore, without family’s care, a lot of youngsters struggle with their
own health problems.
On the other hand, despite some benefits mentioned above, I believe that this tendency could
bring about certain disadvantages. Firstly, living alone could lead to negligence in study and
poor performance at school. This is due to the fact that they need to manage their time, money
do household chores like cooking, doing a laundry and so on, which take up a large proportion
of their day. Secondly, some youngsters are so too lazy or too bad at cooking that canned food
becomes their daily meal. As a result,
Live alone => manage everything (money, do household chores: cooking, doing a laundry, …) =>
take a large proportion of their time => less time on study & cannot focus => poor performance
at school/ bad academic results

- Improve skills
This decision could help them choose the right major and a suitable career path

HW 17/10: Viết Body 1 của Topic 4 - Benefits of using video cameras in public places (lập
nhận diện gương mặt (recognize their faces) also use many cameras to track a criminal’s
Conclusion 2: act as a deterrent: sự ngăn chặn to potential criminals
- Reason: Lắp đặt nhiều camera ở nơi công cộng => biện pháp ngăn chặn hành vi tội phạm =>
tội phạm aware of việc bị giám sát => do not dare => tỉ lệ tội phạm giảm xuống; ensure the
security of the society
- Result: Giúp người dân cảm thấy an toàn hơn ở public places
On the other hand, I believe that video surveillance would brings about many positive outcomes
to the society. First, the appearance of CCTV cameras in public places could help the police to
investigate crimes easier. With the modern technology like face recognition, cameras can
provide important and compelling evidence of an illegal action. Therefore, this solution would
allow the police to solve a case in a more accurate way and shorten their investigation progress.
Second, a large number of camera systems might be an effective approach to deter potential
criminals. Under a close supervision, people intending to commit a crime would not draw the
line on their indecent initiatives and give up their intentions, leading to the lower rate of
wrongdoings and ensure the security of the society.
Note:
Intend to commit a crime

Such a system
Breaking the law
Committing their wrongdoings
Be aware of: nhận thức được rằng

Provide useful evidence
Shorten their investigation process: làm ngắn đi quá trình phá án của họ

- Result: if this happens, nhiều người sẽ mất đi sự tin tưởng với chính quyền

HW 20/10 : Viết Topic 2 - Disadvantages of relocating businesses to regional areas

On one hand, relocating industries and businesses to rural areas COULD result in several
harmful impacts.
Plan:
Conclusion 1: Gây ô nhiễm môi trường cho rural areas

HW 27/10: ARMING OF THE POLICE

On one hand, there is certainly a group of people who insist that the police should not carry
guns. They seem to believe that this could lead to accidents and wrongful shootings. In the
confusion of a chase, the police might unintentionally shoot at an ordinary citizen instead of an
offender, which could sometimes lead to too high a price to pay. However, I would argue that
such a situation is very rare. It is mainly because extensive training in the use of guns would be
given to police officers. Furthermore, government would probably make a strict policy about
misuses as well as when a gun could be fired. Consequently, there is no point in worrying about
a small chance of a problem.
On the other hand, there are two main reasons why the police should be allowed to carry guns
while doing their on duty. The most obvious explanation is that governments should give our
protectors the best means of protecting themselves. If a police officer is faced with an armed
offender, he needs to be supplied with a gun to tackle that threat. By contrast, his life could be
easily threatened since a truncheon is not sufficient defense. In addition, the carrying of guns
by the police could act as an effective deterrent to potential criminals because they would be
fully aware of the consequences that they have to face since the police is allowed to shoot if
the situation goes out of control. In other words, arming the police would increase their status
and help them do their job with less trouble.

HW 17/10: ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION

Vivisection
animal experimentation = animal testing
Flawed (a): not perfect, or containing mistakes
Excessive: quá nhiều khác redundant (a): thừa thãi
View 1: Human treatment of animals is necessary to human life
- Without vivisection, many scientific and medical breakthroughs could not have been
happened.
- Drugs – which havent been tested – are given to citizens => unknown side-effects –
could have been recognized if there was an animal experimentation.
 Phản biện:
- A species (e.g. rats, rabbits or dogs) cannot serve as a reliable experimental model for
humans since there are many differences between our bodies and theirs, such as food
or life habits.
- Developing technology leads to more humane and more efficient alternatives to
vivisection.
View 2: Animal experimentation should be eliminated
- Many animals, such as apes or monkeys, have complex nervous system like ours
=> allowed to feel the pain and fear
=> Human treatment of animals is wrong on principle since all lives matter, animals have
rights, included innocent animals.
- The success and efficiency of vivisection have been greatly exaggerated.
=> many cases in which the products have been tested but still not safe enough for
human uses
=> this proved: vivisection is flawed as a scientific method => should be replaced by a
more political and fruitful technique.

KHÔNG ĐỂ BỊ LẶP Ý => PTICH 1 Ý RỘNG HƠN HOẶC THAY Ý

On one hand, there is certainly a group of people who insist that human treatment of animals
the use of animals in science and medical experiments experimenting is necessary to human
survival. They appear to believe that without the sacrifice of animals, many scientific and
medical breakthroughs could not have been happened. For example, Since many animals share
the same biology and physiology with humans, they could be used in experiments to detect If
an untested drugs are given to citizens, there might emerge unknown hazardous side-effects.
These could have been recognized if there was an animal experimentation. However, I would
argue that not all of these tests are successful. this belief is not fully true . For instance, many
medical products, which had been tested on animals and approved by the FDA in 1976 and
1985, had to be taken off since they were not safe enough for human uses. It is mainly The
reason for the failure of such drugs is mainly because a species cannot serve as a reliable
experimental model for humans.
Moreover, developing technology allow us to have more humane and more efficient
alternatives to vivisection, which makes animal experimentation become excessive. => DÙNG
CHO ĐOẠN 2, TIẾP TỤC PHÂN TÍCH THÊM => ĐOẠN 1 CHỈ CẦN 1 Ý ĐỂ ARGUE

On the other hand, there are two main reasons why vivisection governments should eliminate
animal testing and vivisection. The most obvious explanation is that since all lives matter,
human treatment of animals is wrong on principle. Many advanced species kept for medical
experiments, such as apes or monkeys, have the similar complex nervous system just like
humans that allows them to feel the same pain and fear as humans. Therefore, why do we
torture an innocent animal to satisfy our own benefits? Therefore, our affects on innocent
animals could be regarded as brutally torturing to satisfy our own benefits. In addition, many
failed experiments have shown that the success and efficiency of vivisection have been greatly
exaggerated. For instance, many medical products, which had been tested on animals and
approved by the FDA in 1976 and 1985, had to be taken off since they were not safe enough for
human uses. In addition, advanced technology allows us to have more humane and more
efficient substitutes to vivisection animals, which makes animal experimentation become
excessive unecessary/redundant. For example, computer simulations of diseases and drug
treatments can be a fruitful method alter in the place of vivisection. As these technologies are
improving all the time, we can probably live in a world without experimenting on animals but a
more political and fruitful technique.
CONCLUSION:

HW 6/11: University education should be free to everyone, regardless of income. To what

extent do you agree or disagree?
Agree:
- Education is necessary for everyone and should be freely available
- Increasing the quality of education is a political mission unrelated to tuition fees.
Whether the fees are increased or not, education quality must be the best possible
- Students could be able to focus on their study properly

Disagree:
- A good education costs money

View 1: Tuition fee is essential for developing a better a education.

- A good education costs money
- Eg: Paying higher for study offer conditions that are considered extremely worthwhile,
such as extra-curricular activities - strongly encouraged to complete a well-rounded and
enjoyable education, instructing pupils in many skills useful for adult life
- Phản biện:
 Education is necessary for everyone and should be freely available
 maintaining the quality of education is a political mission unrelated to tuition
fees. Whether the fees are increased or not, education quality must be as good
as possible.
On one hand, there is certainly a group of people who insist that paying for university is
essential to develop a better education. They appear to believe that a good education costs
money. Without tuition fee, some study conditions, which are considered extremely
worthwhile in completing a well-rounded education and instructing pupils in many useful skills
for adult life, would not be available. However, I would argue that this belief is flawed. It is
mainly because education is necessary for everyone, regardless of family ability. Therefore,
maintaining the quality of education is a political mission unrelated to tuition fees. Whether a
student must pay for their study or not, education quality must be as good as possible.

View 1:
If uni edu is free, many students may underestimate the significance of learning
New words:
Take out a loan: vay nợ
A huge waste of national resources
Financial status
Poor backgrounds
Bridge the gap between the rich and the poor

View 2: Governments should make university education free of cost

- Tuition fee is the main reason – students choose to drop university
 Some students with good study records are not able to pay for schools because
their families are poor => a rise of the unemployment rate => affect the progress
of the country in the future
- Students could be able to focus on their study properly
 To cover university fees => do part-time job => pressure => hard to concentrate
on study => bad academic results
 >< => Study become their only duty => enable to totally focus on studying
=> better performance at school

On the other hand, there are two main reasons why governments should make university
education free for all. The most obvious explanation is that tuition fee is the main reason why
some students choose not to pursue higher education drop studying higher. Despite their good
study records, this is because they are not able to pay for schools since their families are in
straitened circumstances. As a result, these students would not be free to thrive and less likely
to become successful in the future, leading to the effect of the country development. In
addition, without tuition fee, students could be able to focus on their study properly. Many
youngsters have to do a part-time job to cover university fees and the pressure from such job
could make them hard to concentrate on their studies, which could result in bad academic
results. If students don’t have to pay for university education, they would be enable to totally
focus on studying and have better performance at school.
