Experiment 1: Measuring Sound / Noise Level in Interiors

GROUP MEMBERS:

Date: _________________ Time: ___________ Location: _____________________

SIL Meter Mode: Slow Fast (circle one)

Background Noise (dB): ________________

Note:

The microphone must be located at least 1 m from walls and other major reflecting surfaces, 1.2 metres above
the floor and at least 1.5 metres from any windows. If these distance conditions cannot be met, variations are
to be noted.

Procedure:

1. Download a Sound Level Meter App on your Android or Apple device. (there are a lot of
sound meter free app available)
2. Choose any 3 sound sources ie,. radio, television, music from your 2nd phone, computer or
your normal voice.
3. Using your Sound level meter app. Record the apparent loudness of sound of each sound
source a) ambient room sound b)sound source 1 c) Sound Source 3 d) Sound Source 4.
Make sure you fix and set the sound level of your sources. Record each apparent loudness
in the given table below.
4. Next is to record the apparent loudness of the combined sound sources. Record this in the
table below.
5. Compute the total apparent loudness of the sound using DECIBEL ADDITION.

Decibel Calculation (Addition of SIL):

Determine how significantly accurate are the recordings? (MV-CV)/CV x100 = _______

What are the factors that compromise the accuracy of the difference between measured value(MV) and computed
value(CV)?
