When great trees fall

1. Tone of the poem

The tone of the poem ‘The Glove and the lions’ is
 emotional
 poignant
 optimistic (at the end)

2. Theme of the poem:

The central theme of the poem is death and its effect on the people and surroundings. It explores the
concepts of loss, grievance, acceptance and hope. The poet elaborates on how the death of a loved one
affects not only big things but also even the smallest things. An extended metaphor has been used to
compare the death of the great souls to that of great trees falling in the forests. People seem to be lost,
confused, saddened, silenced by the death of their dear ones. However, towards the end the poet fills the
readers with a sense of hope. This death is eventually accepted by the people and they work towards their
self- development, moving on from the past. The mood of the poem changes from death, loss and despair
to acceptance, hope and optimism. The poem elaborates on the fact that the pain and sorrow may never
leave us, yet the memory and influence of the great soul will linger and continue to shape our life.
