How would we find the acceleration from a velocity-time graph?

You need to find the gradient of the graph
A car starts from rest and reaches it’s top speed of 85 m/s in 7
seconds. What is the cars acceleration?
Acceleration = change in velocity / time = 85/7 = 12.1 m/s2

We can show how an object’s velocity
changed with time on a velocity-time
graph.

We need to show three different

types of motion:
1. Stationary Key words:
Displacement
2. Constant speed Velocity,
time,
3. Accelerating / decelerating acceleration,
gradient

Velocity – time graphs (Finding distance)

Recall the equation for speed / velocity

To find the area of a
Key words:
Displacement distance triangle, you use the
Velocity, speed = equation:
time,
time
acceleration,
gradient area of triangle = ½ ×
base × height
If you rearrange to find distance:
To find the area of a
distance = speed × time rectangle, you use the
equation:
You can use the area underneath the graph area of rectangle = base
Automaticity: The ability to use some skills with such ease as they no longer require active thinking.
× height
Velocity – time graphs (Finding distance)

In the first 10 seconds this is the area of the

triangle, ½ × 10 s × 40 m/s = 200 m.

From 10 to 20 seconds this is the area of the

rectangle, 10 s × 40 m/s = 400 m.

From 20 to 30 seconds this is the area of the

rectangle and triangle, (10 s × 40 m/s) + (½
× 10 s × 20 m/s) = 500 m.

From 30 to 50 seconds, this is the area of the

triangle, ½ × 20 s × 60 m/s = 600 m.

Total distance travelled = 200 m + 400 m +

500 m + 600 m = 1700 m.

Average speed = total distance ÷ total time =

1,700 m ÷ 50 s = 34 m/s.
