Reading and Comprehension: Writing Assessment

Read Chapter 16 and based on your reading and understanding of the

chapter (New Media), please answer/address four questions only.

1. Explain the relationship between the new media and the self.
New media shapes how we view and express ourselves by offering identity
exploration and self-presentation platforms. Profiles and shared content,
individuals craft idealized versions of themselves, often influenced by societal
norms and peer feedback. While this can boost self-expression, it can also lead
to social comparison, creating pressure and affecting self-esteem. The constant
connectivity of new media blurs the line between who we are and how we want
to be perceived.

2. Identify positive and negative impacts of media on our interpersonal

relationship.
Media has transformed interpersonal relationships by creating connectivity and
linking physical distances, enabling people to maintain connections and build
online communities. However, it can also strain relationships through fake
interactions, miscommunications, and distractions during face-to-face moments.
While it strengthens some bonds, overreliance on media can weaken the depth
of our interactions.

3. Discuss the notion that social media has increased our self-consciousness. Do
you agree or disagree?
Social media has heightened self-consciousness by placing our lives on public
display, subjecting them to constant judgment and comparison. The pressure to
present a clear image often leads to anxiety or self-doubt. While this increased
awareness can encourage self-improvement, it creates unrealistic expectations and
increases insecurities. I agree that this increased focus on image and perception
significantly affects how we view ourselves.

4. Explain the relationship between the media and democracy.

Media is essential to democracy, acting as a channel for information and public
discourse, empowering citizens to engage in civic matters. New media platforms
amplify unheard voices, encourage participation, and pose challenges like
misinformation and opposition. While media can strengthen democratic values,
its potential for bias and unequal access requires careful navigation to ensure
fairness and informed decision-making.

5. Discuss the patterns of ownership and control currently in the media.

Media ownership is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few powerful
corporations, leading control over content and narratives. This strengthening
often prioritizes profit over diversity, resulting in standardized programming and
limited perspectives. Such patterns can suppress alternative viewpoints and
diminish local or independent voices, shaping public opinion through a narrow
lens of information and entertainment.

6. Explain the diversity or lack of representation in the media and discuss the
potential effects.
The media still struggles with a lack of diversity, often underrepresenting or
misrepresenting certain racial, gender, and cultural groups. This absence of
authentic representation can enable stereotypes and marginalize voices,
impacting societal views and reinforcing inequality. When diverse narratives are
included, they create understanding and inclusivity, but the ongoing disparity
shows the need for more fair representation in content creation and leadership
roles.

7. Evaluate the relationship between media and globalization.

Media and globalization are deeply intertwined, as digital platforms connect
people and cultures worldwide in real-time. This global exchange of information
creates cultural diffusion, economic integration, and collaborative innovation.
However, globalization through media can also lead to cultural homogenization,
where dominant cultures overshadow local traditions. Balancing global
connectivity with preserving unique cultural identities remains a critical
challenge in this dynamic relationship.
