Application Activity

In this module, you learned about disruption, diffusion, and globalization. Now it is time
for you to apply what you have learned. Use the Sources of Innovation Lecture Video
and the Diffusion of Innovation Knowledge Extension for help in completing the task
below.

Part 1: Disruption
You’ve learned that disruptive innovations are new technologies or service offerings that
displace long-standing, established organizations. When simple mobile phones first
came on the market and were made affordable, they began to disrupt the sales of
landline phones as well as car phones and two-way radios.* As more features were
added, the mobile phone evolved into a smart phone. These new features, such as
being able to do mathematical calculations on the smart phone, began to disrupt the
sales of other products, such as calculators. What are some other features that were
eventually added to smart phones and the products that were disrupted by these
features being incorporated into one device.

Features added to smartphones Former product sales that were

disrupted

Example: Mathematical calculations could Simple calculators and then later

be done on a smartphone scientific calculator sales were disrupted

1. The inclusion of cameras and their Semi pro and pro cameras sales were
better quality. disrupted.

2. The introduction of editing apps. It disrupted editing pages because only

some exclusive companies got apps the
rest fell.

3. The introduction of electronic maps in This made paper maps obsolete

smartphones

*In reference to Lecture 5.3, mobile phones also disrupted the relationship between the state and society,
where the government historically controlled communications and this service was seen as a public good.
Part 2: Disruption and Diffusion

Review the information from the Diffusion of Innovation Knowledge Extension including
the Infographic on The Diffusion of Innovation Infographic and the Graph of Cell Phone
Sales. As you observe these two charts, you will notice that the shape of the curve from
the Graph of Cell Phone Sales resembles the first half of the curve of the Diffusion of
Innovation Infographic.

Answer the questions below

1. Do you think the adoption of smartphones is a good example of the Diffusion of
Innovation Model? Why or why not?
Yes, because some people are very skeptical about smartphones in terms of their
functions, their effect on the environment, the effect on social life and also in the
economic power it generates.

2. Do you think global smartphone sales have peaked (reached their highest point,
usually followed by a decrease)? Why or why not? What do you observe in your
community/country?
Yes, with no doubt and I think with no doubt as well that is because of their greedy
planned obsolescence, no matter what great innovation they do if they keep that plan
the consumers will always be skeptical.
