This study examines the issue of hunger and poverty in America, categorizing participants as food secure or food insecure based on their financial stability and access to food. It highlights a significant correlation between financial security and food security, noting that those with more money are less likely to experience food insecurity. The research emphasizes the need for increased support and funding for food assistance programs to address this pressing social issue.

Understanding Research Findings

The purpose of this study was to address and educate about the topic of families and

individuals facing hunger and poverty in America. The researchers conducted their study by

handing out questionnaires and dividing the questionnaires up based on responses. The

participants are split up into categories of food secure or food insecure (Brown, J., Huang, F., &

Brown, J. L. 2020). Food secure means the participants feel comfortable with how much food

they have and do not feel like they would go without food, while food insecure voters feel unsure

about their food situation and may go without food. I feel that this information can be related to

anxiety, which we learned about in this module. Anxiety is constantly worrying about something,

in this case, it would be the constant worry of food, when and how you would eat in case there

isn't much food left, and how to space your food and money properly to be able to eat until you

could get more of one or the other.

The main significant difference in the study and comparison is money, the people who

felt more food safe were the people with money. One of the comparisons that stood out to me
was that the majority of food-secure people owned a home while only thirteen percent of food-

insecure people owned a home (Brown, J., Huang, F., & Brown, J. L. 2020). This entails that

people who are food insecure most likely do not have the funds to purchase a home, let alone

food. The key conclusion was that people who were food insecure claimed more money would

help them feel differently (Brown, J., Huang, F., & Brown, J. L. 2020).

Some potential problems with this study is that it may be biased, it depends on where the

experimenter was located when asking people to take the questionnaire, some places are poorer

or richer than others, and they are not asking everyone in the United States, they are just asking

some random people who happened to be in the right place at the right time. I do believe this

study shows how America needs to pitch in more, whether that be offering high allowances for

food stamps or offering higher funding food banks, something needs to be done to help this

epidemic.

This study is important because it brings light into a situation not everyone is comfortable

with talking about, a lot of people will totally ignore the subject because they feel as though it

isn't any of their business but that is wrong. This epidemic is everyone's business because

everyone deserves a full belly and not to worry if they will be able to eat or not. This study could

be used to help improve conditions for food insecure people, offering them not only more food

but more money so they don’t have to worry about everything as much.
