Data gateway
Data gateway
The system that lets us connect our on-premises data sources to the Power BI service is called
the Gateway. It's a small application that runs on our computer, and uses a pre-arranged schedule to
connect to our data, gather any updates, and push them up to the Power BI service.
Formally called the enterprise version. Multiple users can share and reuse a gateway in this mode. For
Power BI, this includes support for both scheduled refresh and Direct Query.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
8 Core CPU
8 GB Memory
64-bit version of Windows 2012 R2
The personal gateway is only available with Power BI Pro. It installs and runs as a service on your
computer.
Data transfer between Power BI and the gateway is secured through Azure Service Bus. The Service Bus
creates a secure channel between the Power BI service and your computer.
This is for Power BI only and can be used as an individual without any administrator configuration. This
can only be used for on-demand refresh and scheduled refresh.
Do I need a gateway?
Before we install a gateway, it's important to know whether or not we really need
one. It really depends on our data sources:
As the name suggests, this gateway is for “personal” use. To use it you simply install it
on your own laptop, desktop computer or even a server if you want. “Personal” does
not mean you can’t use it for business if you want to, it is just a term to distinguish from
the other gateway. What the Personal Gateway does is create a “gateway” or
connection between your computer (that has the software installed) and the Power BI
Service in the cloud. It is kind of like a dedicated VPN designed just to allow Power BI
to talk to the data on your computer.
