Statement of Purpose

My name is Ashish Kumar, and I am excited to apply for the Master of Public Health (MPH)
program at Pace University. I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from
Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences in August 2023. My
educational background, coupled with my practical experience during a six-month Nursing
Clinical Practice internship in a hospital setting, has solidified my commitment to pursuing a
career in public health. This program at Pace University aligns perfectly with my career goals
and educational aspirations, providing the ideal platform for me to contribute meaningfully to
the field of public health.

During my undergraduate studies, I developed a strong foundation in the principles and


practices of nursing. My coursework covered a broad spectrum of health sciences, including
anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology, which equipped me with the
necessary knowledge to understand and address various health issues. One of the most
transformative experiences of my academic journey was my six-month Nursing Clinical
Practice internship. This internship allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world
settings, enhance my clinical skills, and gain invaluable insights into patient care and hospital
operations.

Working in a hospital environment, I encountered a diverse patient population, each with


unique health challenges and needs. I collaborated with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare
professionals to provide comprehensive care, emphasizing the importance of communication,
empathy, and cultural competence. This experience not only honed my clinical abilities but
also ignited my passion for preventive care and health promotion, which are critical
components of public health.

My long-term career goal is to become a public health practitioner who can design,
implement, and evaluate health programs that improve community health outcomes. I am
particularly interested in addressing health disparities and promoting health equity in
underserved populations. The MPH program at Pace University will provide me with the
advanced knowledge and skills necessary to achieve these goals. By specializing in public
health, I aim to transition from direct patient care to a broader role in health policy,
community health education, and program management.

The MPH program at Pace University offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers key
areas such as epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, and health policy and
management. These courses will equip me with the analytical and practical skills needed to
tackle complex public health challenges. Additionally, the program's emphasis on experiential

hands-on learning style and desire to make a tangible impact.
Through this program, I expect to achieve the following educational objectives: develop a
deep understanding of public health principles and practices, enhance my research and
analytical skills, gain expertise in health policy and program management, and engage in
community-based public health practice. The core courses in the MPH curriculum will
provide me with a solid foundation in the theoretical and practical aspects of public health. I
am particularly eager to learn about epidemiological methods and their application in disease
prevention and control. Public health research is essential for developing evidence-based
interventions. The coursework in biostatistics and research methods will enable me to design,
conduct, and analyze research studies effectively. I aim to contribute to the body of
knowledge in public health by participating in research projects and publishing my findings.
Understanding the intricacies of health policy and effective program management is crucial
for implementing successful public health initiatives. The program's focus on health policy
analysis and program evaluation will prepare me to develop and lead health programs that
address the needs of diverse populations. The opportunity to work on community health
projects will allow me to apply classroom learning to real-world scenarios. By collaborating
with local health organizations, I will gain practical experience in health promotion, disease
prevention, and health education.
