INSTALLING PERIPHERALS/DEVICES | W4-5
● Peripheral Devices are those devices which are connected to the computer and it helps the computer
function.
● Mouse is normally plugged with the usb connection. it would be connected through the ps/2 port which is
located on the back of the computer. the installation of mouse is easy, one can just plug the mouse and
the drivers would be searched by windows itself. the mouse can be configured from the control panel
where the speed of it can be improved.
● Keyboard is the famous device that is being used today and it is connected through a usb connection at
the back of the computer. old keyboards used to have the mini din ps/2 connection with them; one would
have to go through the manufacturer's website to know that what are the drivers for the keyboard and
then can get them installed when he connects the keyboard with the computer.
● Scanner is almost identical to installing your printer and simply need to install the drivers and then plug
the usb cable in. read the manufacturer's instructions for more details on this installation process.
● Monitor (also known as a "display requires a free power outlet for a/c power and identifying the
connection type you will use to connect the monitor to your graphics card. for the best picture quality
possible, use the digital dvi port on your graphics card and display if they are available. once you have the
display plugged in, simply connect it to the appropriate connector on your video card and you are ready to
go. drivers are not typically required for displays, but once again consult the manufacturer's instructions
for details.
● Speakers can vary greatly depending on what type of speakers you are using. if you have a simple set of
2.0 or 2.1 speakers all you need do is connect the audio cable to the "line-out" jack of your computer s
sound card, and connect the other end(s) to the speaker unless they are already "hardwired" and plug in
the power cord. read the instructions that came with the speakers and sound card for full details on this
step. you can also find usb-powered speakers that have their own sound card built in and need only be
connected to power.

some cams require that the drivers be installed first, so be sure to read the instructions that came with
your webcam to avoid any problems.
● Printer where it's within arms reach of the console. to get the printer and console talking to each other,
you need a cable, either a usb cable or the traditional printer cable. when you re blessed with a wireless
printer, keep it close enough to the console to ensure that it's in range of the signal.

COMPUTER DRIVER, ACCESSING DRIVE, OS UPDATES, PATCHES | W6

COMPUTER DRIVER is a piece of software that enables computer to communicate with devices such as USB
flash drive, cellular phone, microphone, printer, video card, and similar things. It typically tells to communicate
properly
ACCESSING DRIVE
❖ You can access the drivers of specific hardware by going to device manager in your computer. You can see
all the devices and which of it is not properly installed or needs update. You can open it by right clicking
the start button and go to device manager or just search it to your PC.
❖ You can double click each manufacturer and model of each device and update the driver if available
online.
OPERATING SYSTEM UPDATES - In Windows 10, computers update periodically which includes patches
and drivers for several hardware or software in your PC. If it is connected to the internet, your PC
automatically downloads and install updates whenever available.
PATCHES - these are pieces of code to replace some existing code on your computer. these serve as fixes for
errors that needs to be corrected. modern software such as windows operating system are so complicated to
make so mistakes and glitches do happen, then, there comes the patches.

INSTALL OS, DRIVERS' UPDATES AND PATCHES | W7

Windows 10
❖ Windows 10 automatically downloads and installs drivers on your devices. However, Microsoft has a set
of drivers, they are not always the latest version, and the other drivers for specific devices are not found
❖ Windows 10 includes default drivers that work on a common source to ensure the hardware works
successfully. If required, you can also install the drivers yourself. But, if the drivers in the system is
identifying specific or there's another issue, you may have to search them out and visit the manufacturers
website of the hardware then install it manually.
❖ The updated versions keep up with the latest security issues and adapt to Windows 10 changes to ensure
a smoother experience. Also, driver updates fix compatibility problems, errors, broken code, and add
features to the hardware.

THE USE OF DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS IN TESTING INSTALLED HARDWARE

COMPONENTS AND OTHER PERIPHERALS | W8
Diagnostic Tools are used to test and diagnosed equipment. Diagnostic tools include the following:
1. DIGITAL MULTIMETER - is a device that can take many types of measurements. It tests the integrity of
circuits and the quality of electricity in computer components.
2. LOOPBACK ADAPTER - also called a loopback plug, tests the basic functionality of computer ports. The
adapter is specific to the port that you want to test.
3. TONER PROBE - a two-part tool. The toner part is connected to a cable at one end using specific
adapters, such as an RJ-45, coaxial, or metal clips. The toner generates a tone that travels the length of
the cable. The probe part traces the cable. When the probe is in near proximity to the cable to which the
toner is attached, the tone can be heard through a speaker in the probe.
4. LAN TESTER - used for testing RJ45 cables, RJ11 telephone cables and network cables. It keeps your
network running smoothly by testing wrong connection, short circuit and open circuit. the two-part unit
can be separated for remote closet testing.

SOFTWARE TOOLS - Like hardware tools, there are a variety of software tools that can be used to help
technicians pinpoint and troubleshoot problems. Many of these tools are free and several come with the
Windows operating system.
❖ Disk Management Tools - Software tools help detect the computer and network problems and determine
which computer device is not working properly. A technician must be able to use a range of software tools
to diagnose problems, maintain hardware, and protect the data stored on a computer. You must be able to
identify which software to use in different situations. Disk management tools help detect and correct disk
errors, prepare a disk for data storage, and remove unwanted files.

SOME DISK MANAGEMENT TOOLS:

➢ FDISK: A command-line tool that creates and ➢ Defragmentation: Optimizes space on a hard
deletes partitions on a hard drive. The FDISK drive to allow faster access to programs and
tool is not available in Windows XP, Vista, or 7. data.
➢ Format: Prepares a hard drive to store ➢ Disk Cleanup: Clears space on a hard drive by
information searching for files that can be safely deleted.
➢ ScanDisk or CHKDSK: Checks the integrity of ➢ System File Checker (SFC): A command-line
files and folders on a hard drive by scanning tool that scans the operating system critical
the file system. These tools might also check files and replaces files that are corrupted.
the disk surface for physical errors.

TEST PROCEDURE is a set of guides to manage what you need to be done through test the installation.
1. Gathering test information: Run the tests required by the process and find out what happens. You must
record all the results of your tests in a log so that you know which pass and which fail, thereby requiring
further action.
2. Validating the test information: Check the information you collected from the tests to make sure it is
correct. This is typically complete by running the tests again.
3. Responding to test information: You need to be able to identify when a test shows problem or is
successful.
4. Checking specification: Check the specification for the installation to make sure that it has been met. For
example, if a user requested an upgrade to make their display run at 1920 x 1200, then the ICT expert
must check that the graphics card and screen can do this.

EXTERNAL VISUAL INSPECTION - contains a quick inspection of outside part of the computer, the monitor,
the keyboard, any peripherals, and cables. While performing the visual inspection,
INTERNAL VISUAL INSPECTION - A simple visual inspection of a computer’s internal hardware can often
lead to the source of a problem, such as a loose expansion card, cable connector, or mounting screw.
