BulbGuard: Solar Energy Powered System for Grass Removal and Weed

Control for Bulb-Producing Crop Fields.

Introduction

Onions, garlic, tulips, shallots, and other crops that produce bulbs

require a weed-free environment to develop optimally. Crops depend on

certain resources which weeds compete for. Common methods of removing

weeds include hand labor, which can be physically demanding, and the use

of chemical herbicides, which can cause significant threats to the

environment due to the degradation and contamination of soil. It is

inefficient, burdensome, and environmentally harmful.

This study presents the use of BulbGuard, an automated system

intended for bulb-producing fields. The system integrates a solar-energy

powered sensor and robotic arms with precision grippers for efficient grass

removal. This helps to reduce hand labor and minimize the use of chemical

herbicides.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of using an

advanced technology in agriculture for a more systematic approach in the

modern world.

I. Background of the Study

Competition between weeds and crops for resources such as sunlight,

water, space, and soil nutrients, leads to a reduced crop yield and quality.

Farmers rely on the traditional weeding methods including hand labor and
chemical herbicides, which is inconvenient, environmentally harmful, and

untimely in this modern generation.

With advancements in autonomous farming and renewable energy,

the integration of a solar-powered weed control system introduces a

sustainable alternative. This study aims to develop BulbGuard, which uses

solar energy and weed removal mechanism to promote an efficient and eco-

friendly solution.

II. Statement of the Problem

This study would like to delve into the factors that may be of concern:

1. How effective is BulbGuard in removing unwanted grass without

damaging the crops?

2. How does BulbGuard compare to traditional grass removal and

weeding methods?

3. What are the advantages and limitations of using a solar-powered

grass removal system?

III. Hypothesis

H1. The BulbGuard significantly improves weed control efficiency and

enhances crop production compared to the traditional methods of grass

removal.

H0. The BulbGuard has no significant effect on weed control and crop

production compared to the traditional weeding methods.

IV. Significance of the Study

Farmers: It helps by reducing labor costs and reliance in chemical

herbicides, while increasing farm productivity.

Agriculture Industry: Promotes a sustainable alternative solution for weed

management.

Environment: Lessen the use of chemical herbicides, reducing soil

contamination.

Technology Development: Encourages development in solar-powered

agricultural automation.

V. Scope and Delimitations

Scope:

This study focuses on bulb-producing crops including onions, garlic, and

shallots, which are commonly cultivated in the Philippines. It can also be

useful in root crops, since it has a similar characteristic to a bulb crop.

It provides efficient weeding with the use of solar energy, which is

sustainable and low-maintenance, greatly benefiting the farmers.

Delimitations:

This study does not guarantee to be efficient in other types of crops other

than bulb and root-producing crops since it uses an automated sensors to

differentiate crop from weeds.

The system's performance may vary depending on weather conditions,

affecting the solar energy availability.
