Semi - Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 12 CNF

Exploring Literary Elements

Learning Objectives:

 Students will be able to identify and analyze various literary elements in

creative non-fiction writing.
 Students will be able to apply different literary elements to their own creative
non-fiction writing.
 Students will be able to recognize how literary elements contribute to the
overall impact of a piece of writing.

Introduction: To start the lesson, engage students with a short discussion about the
importance of literary elements in creative non-fiction writing. Highlight how these
elements can enhance the reader's experience and convey deeper meaning in the text.

Identifying Literary Elements (15 minutes): Begin by introducing students to common

literary elements such as imagery, figurative language, tone, and structure. Provide
examples of each element from published creative non-fiction pieces and discuss how
they contribute to the overall impact of the writing. Encourage students to take notes
and ask questions for clarification.

Activity 1: Literary Elements Scavenger Hunt (20 minutes): Divide students into
small groups and provide them with a list of literary elements to find in various
creative non-fiction texts. Each group will be tasked with identifying examples of
these elements and explaining how they enhance the writing. Encourage students to
collaborate and discuss their findings with the class.

Analyzing Literary Elements in Practice (20 minutes): Next, have students read a
short creative non-fiction piece and identify specific literary elements within the text.
Lead a class discussion on how these elements are used by the author to convey
meaning and create a strong impact on the reader. Encourage students to share their
interpretations and insights.

Activity 2: Creating a Literary Elements Storyboard (25 minutes): Provide students

with a blank storyboard template and have them choose a creative non-fiction piece to
analyze further. Students will fill in each box of the storyboard with a different
literary element found in the text, along with a brief explanation of how it is used.
This visual representation will help students visualize how literary elements work
together in a piece of writing.
Applying Literary Elements in Writing (20 minutes): To conclude the lesson,
challenge students to incorporate at least three different literary elements into a short
creative non-fiction piece of their own. Encourage them to experiment with different
techniques and styles to enhance their writing. Students will then share their work
with the class or in small groups for feedback and discussion.

Closure: Wrap up the lesson by reviewing the importance of literary elements in

creative non-fiction writing and how they can be used to create powerful and
engaging narratives. Encourage students to continue exploring and experimenting
with these elements in their own writing.
