CE206: Geotechnical engineering I

Mid-semester examination Max marks:50

26th February 2024 Duration: 2 hours.

This question paper consists of two sections (sections A and B). Section A contains 4 questions offve
marks each and B contains 3 questions often marks each.

Answer all the questions.

Assume any missing data and clearly justify the assumption.

Section A

1What is soil three phase system? How it is represented in a block diagram? Define void ratio and porosity
and degree of saturation from the phase diagram. Is it possible to represent the soil system using a two phase

diagram in any case? Justify your statement.

What are the limitations of sedimentation analysis for the determination soil particle size? What is the size

fraction of the soil used in this analysis?

3 What is relative density? How it is determined? A test for the relative density of soil in place was performed
by digging a hole in the soil. The volume of the hole was 400 mL and the moist weight of the excavated soil

was 9 N. After drying in the oven, the weight was found to be 7.8 N. Of the dried soil, 4 N was poured in a

vessel in a loose state and the volumewas found to be 270 mL. The same weight of the soil was vibrated and

tampered and the volume, was reduced to 200 mL. Estimate the field water content and the relative density.

What are discharge velocity and seepage velocity? A constant head permeability test was conducted on a
4.
sand specimen of 8 cm in length and 60cm' in area. If the head causing the flow is 50 cm and the quantity

of the water collected was 600 mL in 12 minutes, estimate the coefficient of permeability. Onoven drying,

the test specimen has a mass of 750g,estimate the seepage velocity. Assume G-2.7.

Section B

5. Acubical soil sample has a dimension of 7.6 mm x 7.6 mm x 7.6 mm, moisture content of 68.50 % and bulk

density of 1.44 g/em'. If the specific gravity of the solids is 2.55

Estimate the dry density, void ratio and the degree saturation

of
Determine the volumes and masses of thesolid, water and the air phases and mark them in the soil

three phase block diagram.

Derive expressions to estimate the equivalent permeability of stratified soil deposits

When the flow is parallel to the planes of stratification

When the flow is normal to the planes of stratification

Estimate the equivalent permeability of the soil system presented in Fig 1. The red colour arrow

indicates the direction of water flow.

What is a Laplace's equation? Derive this equation for a two dimensional flow of water through the saturated

soil. What are the assumptions considered while deriving this equation? Justify those assumptions.
