1) A small and Medium-gauge electrical conductors used in
writing in buildings are typically categorized by the
American Wire Gauge (AWG). The AWG number (No.) of a
conductor is inversely proportional to the cross-section
diameter of the wire – that is, a smaller gauge number
identifies a thicker wire. Approximate the resistance in
100 and 500 ft lengths for the following conductors. A
no. 12 AWG copper conductor (wire) with a resistance of
1.62Ω/1000 ft.
Solution:
For the 100 ft conductor:
1.62 Ω
100 ft × =0.162Ω
1000 ft
For the 500 ft conductor:
1.62 Ω
500 ft × =0.81Ω
1000 ft

Answer: The resistance of the 100 ft conductor is 0.162 Ω, while

for the 500 ft conductor, the resistance is 0.81 Ω

2) A) What is the voltage if a resistance of 25 Ω produces a

current of 250 amperes?
Solutions:
V =IR=( 250 amps )( 25 Ω )=6250 V

Answer: The voltage is 6250 V .

B) What is the current produced by a 9-V battery flowing

through a resistance of 200 Ω?
Solutions:
V 9V
I= = =0.045 amps
R 200 Ω
Answer: The current produced is 0.045 amps .
C) What resistance would produce a current of 200 amps with
a voltage of 2,000 V?
Solutions:
V 2000 V
R= = =10 Ω
I 200 amps

Answer: The resistance is 10 Ω.

3) A lamp is designed for use at 120 V and has a current

draw of 0.5 A. Determined the power consumed.
Solutions:
P=IV =( 0.5 amps )( 120 V )=60W

Answer: The power consumed is 60 W .

4) Calculate the amount of electrical energy consumption for

a month of 30 days in household of 220 V line with the
following appliances being used: (a) five 60 W bulb for
six hours. (b) two 1000 W heater for 2 hours. (c) 750 W
electric iron for 2 hours. (d) 100 W refrigerator for 24
hours. (e) 1100 W microwave oven for 3 hours. The cost of
first 200 units is P2.40 and next 200 units is P3.90 per
unit respectively.
Solution:
a) five 60 W bulb for six hours
1 kWh
q=Pt =5 ( 60W ) (6 h )=1800 Wh × =1.8 kWh
1000 Wh
b) two 1000 W heater for 2 hours
1 kWh
q=Pt =2 ( 1000 W )( 2 h )=4000 Wh × =4 kWh
1000 Wh
c) 750 W electric iron for 2 hours
1 kWh
q=Pt =( 750W ) ( 2h )=1500 Wh × =1.5 kWh
1000 Wh
d) 100 W refrigerator for 24 hours
1 kWh
q=Pt =( 100W ) ( 24 h )=2400Wh × =2.4 kWh
1000 Wh
e) 1100 W microwave oven for 3 hours
1 kWh
q=Pt =( 1100W ) ( 3 h )=3300 Wh × =3.3 kWh
1000 Wh
q T =1.8 kWh+ 4 kWh +1.5 kWh+2.4 kWh+ 3.3 kWh=13 kWh

q 30 days =( 30 ) ( 13 kWh ) =390 kWh=200 kWh+190 kWh

Bill=( 200× 2.40 ) + ( 190 ×3.90 )=1221 pesos

Answer: The amount of electrical energy consumption for a
month of 30 days in household of 220 V line, is 1221 pesos .

5) Six Lamps are wired in a circuit. Each lamp draws 0.75 A

and has a resistance of 110 Ω. Neglecting the effects of
the wiring, Determine the following:
a) Total amperage in a series circuit
I T =I each lamp =0.75 A
b) Total amperage in a parallel circuit
I T =0.75 A+ 0.75 A +0.75 A+0.75 A+ 0.75 A +0.75 A=4.5 A
c) Total Resistance in a series circuit
RT =110 Ω+110 Ω+110 Ω+110 Ω+110 Ω+110 Ω=660 Ω
d) Total Resistance in a parallel circuit
1
RT = =18.33 Ω
1 1 1 1 1 1

110 Ω 110 Ω 110 Ω 110 Ω 110 Ω 110 Ω
