Q1. “Linguistically, all languages are the same but based on non- linguistic
reasons, not all languages are the same”. Discuss this statement.
Q2. ‘Pidgins and Creoles are evidence of language being created and shaped
by society for its own end’. Discuss this statement.
Q3 Discuss the defining features of a Pidgin and a Creole.
Q4. Using relevant illustrations, discuss the statement “Pidgins are a product
of multilingualism”
Q5. Do pidgins have a single origin or did they develop independently?
(Mono Vs Polygenetic theory. Give evidence to support your answer.
Q 6. Using examples, explain how language as an essential aspect of ethnic
membership can be used to build or break a society.
Q7. “As much as language is a badge of identity, it also acts as a cultural
barrier, promoting conflict rather than co-operation”. Discuss this statement.
Q8. “Language choice is available to bilingual individuals. However, such
choice is non-random, it is heavily influenced by external constraints”.

Q13. The present language policy in Kenya is in principle tilted towards
promoting the acquisition and use of English against mother tongues. To
what extent do you agree with this statement?
Q14. Underdevelopment and injustices in Kenya can be attributed to the
prevailing language policy that violates the linguistic human rights of an
individual and condemns one when he/she fails exams. To what extent do
you agree with this statement?
Q15. There is a relationship between, language, education and development.
Discuss.
Q16. How possible is it for the East African countries to have a language
policy that works for them all. (15 Marks).
Q17. “Linguistic diversity is a resource to the East African nations”. Using
examples, discuss this statement.
