Kami Export - Simple Machines-Virtual Lab#

The document outlines a lab activity on simple machines, including videos on work, mechanical advantage, inclined planes, levers, screws, wheels and axles, and pulleys. It includes questions and explanations about how these machines function and their mechanical advantages. Students are instructed to watch the videos and answer related questions to understand the principles of physics involved in simple machines.

Video Titles
What is Work
● Is the weight lifter doing the same amount of work when he lifts the 1200N barbell 1m as when he lifts
no
the same barbell 2m? ________ Explain.
the distance will effect the amount of work being done
● What is work in physics?

work= force x distance

● What is a joule?
A joule is the unit for work
Mechanical Advantage and Friction
● How do machines make work easier?
They meet the force needed but don't need to work
● How do you find the mechanical advantage of a lever?
output/input fore
● What causes the mechanical advantage of the inclined plane to be less than that of the lever?
Friction causes this because you have to work against

Inclined Plane
● Explain how an inclined plane does work.
By increasing the distance
● How do you find the mechanical advantage of an inclined plane?
output force/input force

Lever
● Explain how a lever does work.

A lever works by using the same amount of forces and doubling the work.

● What are the three types of levers? Give examples of each.

Different levels that are based one where the fulcrum and load are. Seesaw, scissors, bat.
Screw and Wheel
● Explain how a screw does work?

A screw works by transforming direction into a downward force.

● Explain how a wheel & axel work.

They work because the wheel can continuously rotate around the axel depending on the force due
to lack of friction

● How do you find the mechanical advantage of a screw and, wheel & axle?
1. Screw-

MA = circumference/pitch

2. Wheel and Axel-

Ma= ra\re

Pulley
● Explain how a pulley does work.

a pulley does work by eliminating the emoting of work u need to log heavy objects

● What are the three types of pulleys?

fixed, moveable, and compound pulleys.

● How does each type of pulley make work easier?

1. changes the direction of the force

2. changes force applied

3. does both
