CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The world is changing rapidly due to society's fast-paced

use of technology and social media, which have become
essential parts of our lives. Technology is the use of tools
and ideas to solve problems and make life better for
students. Through social media, students can interact,
express their ideas, and connect with other people. Students
are continuously exposed to this technologies and platforms.
However, the excessive use of social media can distract
students from their studies, leading to decreased
concentration in academic performance.

Today's students live in a world where these technologies

are a part of their everyday lives. While technology has
many positive aspects, it has also raised concerns. Despite
its benefits, there are significant negative effects on
students' mental well-being, such as addiction, poor time
management, sleep disruption, social comparison, and
academic pressure. Since this stage of life is critical for
development, students are especially vulnerable to the
negative effects of excessive use of social media and
technology. Using technology is becoming a hobby for
students therefore, it affects their mental well-being.

In this days, technology and social media have become

integral components of daily life, particularly among
students. For Grade 11 HUMSS students at ACLC Naga, as well
as their counterparts globally, the pervasive use of these
tools raises significant concerns regarding mental well-
being. While technology offers unprecedented access to
information and social connectivity, it also presents
challenges that can impact mental health. The rapid
evolution of digital platforms has created a dynamic
environment where young

individuals often find themselves navigating complex social

landscapes, potentially leading to issues such as anxiety,
depression, and reduced self-esteem are potential
consequences of navigating these digital landscapes.
Addressing these concerns requires a multifaceted approach
involving education, responsible usage, and support systems.

Numerous studies underscore the duality of technology’s

impact on mental health. Research by Twenge (2019)
highlights a correlation between increased screen time and
heightened levels of psychological distress among students.
Similarly, a study published in the Journal of students
emphasizes that excessive social media use can lead to
feelings of loneliness and inadequacy. These findings are
not limited to local contexts but are echoed in
international research, indicating a global concern. For
instance, the Royal Society for Public Health in the UK
reported that social media platforms can exacerbate feelings
of anxiety and depression among youth worldwide.

This problem evolves worldwide. A lot of students are

experiencing depression, anxiety, sleep disruption, being
distracted at school, having no time for self-reflection,
engaging in risky behavior in order to gain likes, and
spending more time on social media than with real-world
friends. Is it because they use these factors not in a
responsible manner; they spend too much time behind in the
limit of using different types of gadgets and social media
platforms. Given these compelling findings, it is crucial to
acknowledge and address the potential adverse effects of
technology and social media use on the mental well-being of
Grade 11 HUMSS students at ACLC Naga. By examining this
issue in a broader context, educators, parents, and
policymakers can work together to develop strategies that
promote healthy digital habits and support the mental well-
being of young individuals both locally and globally.
Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to explore the impact of technology and

social media use on the mental well-being of grade 11 HUMSS
students in ACLC Naga during the 2024-2025 school year. It
will focus on the different ways these digital tools can
influence their daily lives and overall health. The study
will also examine how these factors affect academic
performance, identify responsible usage habits, and assess
the amount of time students spend on these platforms.
Finally, it will highlight the potential benefits of
limiting their use.

This study seeks to answer the following questions:

1.How does the amount of time spent on social media and

technology affect the academic performance of the students?

2.How do students perceive their mental well-being as

influenced by their daily interactions with technology and
social media platforms?

3.What strategies can students implement to balance

technology and social media usage while maintaining their
mental well-being?
Hypothesis

There is a relationship between the amount of time spent on

technology and students’ mental well-being.

Significance of the Study

Using social media and technology can make people feel more
depressed and anxious, especially teenagers and young
adults. Technology can be a great way to connect with loved
ones and find resources and support, it can also take focus
away from face-to-face conversations, create unrealistic
expectations, and exacerbate feelings of jealousy and
insecurity. Thus, the result of this study will be of
significance to the following:

Students: The results of the study were used to help

students establish time limits for their use of social media
and technology. The findings of this study will help them
realize that there are numerous ways to use these factors
responsibly.

Teachers: This research will provide awareness among

teachers that students rely on using social media platforms
rather than making their schoolwork independently. This will
give them the idea to take action about this matter.

Parents: Parents will learn from this study that too much
exposure to using technology and social media has negative
effects on their children's mental health. Parents will
undoubtedly forbid their children from using social media
and technology for extended periods of time.

Future Researcher: The results of this study can be used as

proof for future researchers that there is a connection
between students' use of social media and technology and how
it affects students’ mental health. They will gain knowledge
from these findings that we have validated for the safe
usage of these factors.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the influence of using technology and

social media on students’ mental well-being. Among grade 11
HUMSS students in ACLC Naga. Who enrolled in this school
year 2024-2025. The study will focus in all grade 11 HUMSS
students in ACLC Naga they will serve as respondents.
Moreover, other year of level, even grade 12 HUMSS students
are excluded from this study. This study is limited to the
size 105 of its total population of the grade 11 HUMSS
students. The information that will be gathered of the
influence of the use of technology and social media on
mental well-being among grade 11 HUMSS students will be
helping to determine appropriate usage practices of
technology and social media for the students.
