1A) List four penicillins. Write the mechanism of action, two uses and adverse effects of penicillins. (5)
1B) Name two aminoglycosides. Mention four common properties of aminoglycosides. (3)
1C) Mention two advantages and two disadvantages of combined use of antimicrobial agents. (2)
2A) Classify local anaesthetics and explain their mechanism of action. (6)
2B) Explain two techniques of local anaesthesia with suitable examples. (4)

3. Answer the following:

3A) Explain four factors modifying drug action with suitable examples. (4)
3B) Mention four anticholinergics with one use for each. (4)
3C) Define styptics. Mention four examples and uses. (4)
3D) Mention four uses of glucocorticoids. Mention two measures to minimize the suppression of (4)
hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis by glucocorticoids.
3E) List two loop diuretics. Mention the mechanism of action, two uses and two adverse effects of loop (4)
diuretics.
3F) Mention two advantages and two disadvantages of intravenous route of drug administration. (4)
3G) Mention two groups of antianginal drugs with an example for each. Explain the mechanism of action (4)
and adverse effects of any one.
3H) Explain how fluorides prevent dental caries. Add a note on fluoride toxicity. (4)
3I) Explain the advantages of benzodiazepines over barbiturates. (4)
3J) List two gastric acid secretion inhibitors used in peptic ulcer. Write briefly on the treatment of H. (4)
pylori induced peptic ulcer.
