CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The Philippines was the only Southeast Asian nation to offer

its citizens only ten years of basic education five years ago,
but since K–12 was implemented, the nation has joined its
neighbors in implementing an educational system that will give
students greater opportunities globally. The K–12 program has
placed the nation on the right route, but more change in the
education system is necessary.
K stands for kindergarten and 12 refers to the succeeding 12
years of basic education, which is why it is called K to 12.
The 12 years of basic education comprises of 6 years of
elementary education, 4 years of junior high school, and 2
years of senior high school. The K-12 program offers a
decongested 12-year program for the students which aims to
give them sufficient time to master skills and acquire basic
competencies with the goal of being competitive on a global
scale. Students of the new system will be equipped with the
skills required to be ready for employment, entrepreneurship,
middle-level skills development, and higher education even if
they intend to do so after graduation.
The K to 12 program promotes global competency by accelerating
mutual recognition of Filipino graduates and professionals in
other countries. The new curriculum allows students to choose
between three tracks which are the Academic, Technical-
Vocational-Livelihood, and the Sports and Arts strand. It will
also give students opportunities to undergo immersions, have
relevant exposure to a variety of industries, and to have
experience in their chosen track. Whereas the old curriculum
offers a broad and linear curriculum, it did not include
enough practical applications like the K-12 does.
Starting with Kindergarten as the foundation for lifelong
learning and development, the 12-year curriculum aims to give
students the journey in education that they deserve. Foreign
countries perceive that a ten-year curriculum in the education
department is insufficient that is why many Filipinos abroad
are not recognized professionals. With the new curriculum,
graduates are fully equipped with the skills which can help
them stand out on a global scale and compete accordingly
according to international standards.
With the K to 12 program implementation, students decide on
their career track before entering SHS. Choosing a track in
SHS is the first step that a student must take regarding
his/her career path. This phase is crucial since this period
serves as a preparatory ground for students. Career track
choice must be planned carefully because of its long-term
consequences to a person’s professional development and future
accomplishments.
The process of choosing a career involves various factors that
influence an individual's decision-making. Understanding these
factors is essential to make an informed choice and find a
career path that aligns with personal goals and aspirations.
This research explores the different factors that influencing
career choice, including personal, social, and environmental
factors. Additionally, it delves into the role of education in
career choice, factors that affect career development, and
provides resources and tools for career exploration.
First, Personal factors play a crucial role in shaping an
individual's career choice. These factors are unique to each
person and are influenced by their personality traits,
interests, values, and skills. Personality traits such as
extroversion or introversion can guide individuals toward
careers that suit their social preferences. Interests and
passions also heavily impact career choices. For instance,
someone with a love for art may pursue a career in the
creative field.
Secondly, Social factors exert a significant influence on
career choices. These factors encompass the influence of
family, peers, mentors, and cultural norms. Family plays a
crucial role in shaping an individual's career aspirations.
Parents' expectations, values, and experiences can heavily
influence the career choices of their children. Similarly,
peers and mentors can provide guidance and inspiration,
exposing individuals to different career options and helping
them make informed decisions. Cultural norms and societal
expectations also play a role in career choices. Certain
cultures may prioritize specific professions, leading
individuals to consider careers that align with societal norms
and expectations.
And last, Environmental factors refer to external
circumstances that can impact career choices. Economic
conditions, job market trends, and geographic location are
examples of environmental factors. Economic conditions can
influence the availability of job opportunities and the
financial stability of specific industries. Job market trends,
such as emerging technologies or changes in consumer behavior,
can create new career paths or render certain professions
obsolete. Moreover, geographic location can influence career
choices due to differences in industry presence and
opportunities available in specific regions.
This research will help us understand what kind of support and
guidance students need to make informed decisions about their
future careers especially the Grade 10 students.
This study will focus on determining factors such as Personal,
Social and Environmental factors on how they affect students
on their career choice decision among grade 10 students of
