Homework #10: MTM1

1. A work element in a manual assembly task consists of the MTM-1 basic motion
elements in the table below.
a. Determine the normal times in TMUs for these basic motion elements.
b. Determine the total time for this work element in sec.

Sol: (17 points)

Basic Element Description Time in TMU

1 R16C 17
2 G4A 7.3
3 M10B5 2.2 + 1.06 * 12.2 = 15.132
4 RL1 2
5 R14B 14.4
6 G1B 3.5
7 M8C3 2.2 + 1.06 * 11.8 = 14.708
8 P1NSE 10.4
9 RL1 2
Total Time 86.44

= 3.11184 sec.

2. Identify symbols and find time values in TMUs for the following motions according
to MTM-1 systems, then convert the TMU values to seconds:

Sol: (39 points)

i. Move a nut to box A, 35 inches far from present position this nut less than
2.5 pounds.

M35B = 24.3 + 5 * 0.6 = 27.3 TMU

= 27.3 * 0.036 = 0.9828 seconds

ii. Turn hand loaded more than 5 pounds 150 degrees.

T150M = 12.7 TMU

= 12.7 * 0.036 = 0.4572 seconds

iii. Walk 12 paces.

W12P = 12 * 15 = 180 TMU

= 180 * 0.036 = 6.48 seconds

iv. Sidestep, 20 inches, lagging leg contact floor before next motion can be
made.

SS20C2 = 34.1 + 1.1 * 8 = 42.9 TMU

= 42.9 * 0.036 = 1.5444 seconds

v. Eye travel between two points 24 inches apart where line of travel is 18
inches from eye.

ET24/18 = 15.2 * (24/18) = 20.267 ≥ 20; hence use 20 TMU

= 20 * 0.036 = 0.72 seconds

vi. Position, light pressure required, nonsymmetrical part, difficult to handle.

P2NSD = 26.6 TMU

= 26.6 * 0.036 = 0.9576 seconds

vii. Reach 12 inches, to a bolt in a pin, the pin has different types of bolts and
nuts.

R12C = 14.2 TMU

= 14.2 * 0.036 = 0.5112 seconds

viii. Read an instruction set before proceeding to perform a processing task, in

which the instruction document contains 200 words.

R200 = 200 * 5.05 = 1010 TMU

= 1010 * 0.036 = 36.36 seconds

3. Reproduce solved example in the book, Figure 234, page 386.
