The Mole: Measuring Matter

Grade 10 Advanced

Week 3: 17th Jan. 2024

Federal Entity | ‫هيئة اتحادية‬

Learning objectives:

1. Explain how a mole is used to in-directly count the number of

particles of matter.
2. Relate the mole to a common everyday counting unit.
3. Convert between moles and number of representative particles .

 Review Vocabulary: Molecule: two or more atoms that

covalently bond together to form a unit.
New terms in this section:

1. Mole (written: mole/mol)(‫)المول‬

2. Avogadro’s number
For this chapter we’ll do a lot of calculations, so make sure you have
a notebook and a calculator near by…..
Starter: particles in a dozen

Each dozen has 12 pieces of roses

 12 roses = 1 dozen roses

Q:How many roses are in 3.5 dozen of roses?

Write your
answers in the
chat box (2min).

12 roses
Conversion: 3.5 dozen roses = 42 roses
× 1 dozen roses
Starter: particles in a dozen

Each dozen has 12 pieces of roses

 12 roses = 1 dozen roses

Q: How many dozen roses are in 36 pieces of roses ?

1 dozen roses
Conversion: 36 roses = 3 dozens
× 12 roses
The Mole

 The mole, abbreviated mol, is the SI base unit used to measure the amount of substance.

 A mol of anything contains 6.02*1023 Representative particles.

 1 mole is the amount of atoms in 12 g of pure carbon-12, or 6.02  1023 atoms.

 Avogadro’s number:

1 mol of NaCl = 6.02*1023 Avogadro’s number Amadeo Avogadro

1 mol of H2O = 6.02*1023 Avogadro’s number
1 mol of Cu = 6.02*1023 Avogadro’s number
The Mole: How big is it?

 Let take a look at how this number is abbreviated scientifically

6.02*1023 Representative particles.

 Avogadro’s number:

 Avogadro’s number is 602 hexilion things

(602 with 21 zeros to it right)

 If you stacked daunts on top of each other, a mole of them would

reach from Earth to the Sun and back 200 billion time

 Because we deal with tiny atoms in chemistry, a mole of them

isn’t that big.
The Mole: How big is it?

Because atoms are

tiny, a mole of them
is a manageable
size
(You see in this pic. 1

measuring paper)
Moles to particles

Let say we want to determine how many particles of sucrose are in 3.5 mol of sucrose?

Number of moles = number of representative particles

×

6.02*1023 molecules sucrose

3.5 mol sucrose * = 2.11*1024 molecules sucrose
1 mol sucrose
Particles to moles

number of representative particles = Number of moles

×
