CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Project

Management is the strategic and intentional process of planning, organizing,

leading, and controlling resources to efficiently and effectively achieve
organizational goals, objectives, and vision, while fostering a culture of innovation,
collaboration, and continuous improvement. The application of knowledge, skills
and techniques to achieve specific and objectives and goals (Webster universal
dictionary 2010). Management is the act or skill of directing, controlling, or
coordinating the activities of an organization, business, or other entity with entity
with the goal achieving specific objectives (Microsoft Encarta 2010)

Smart Waste Management System refers to the strategic and intentional integration
of advanced technologies, data analytics, and innovative practices to optimize
waste collection, transportation, and disposal processes. This approach enables
waste management authorities to make data-driven decisions, improve operational
efficiency, and reduce environmental impacts. Smart waste management system is
the web-based geographical information system (GIS) that integrates the waste
management data with spatial analysis to optimize waste collections routes, reduce
operational cost, and improve waste management services (Abdul M 2013).

The Smart Waste Management System is a revolutionary project aimed at

transforming the way waste is managed in urban areas. The project leverages
cutting-edge technologies such as IoT sensors, data analytics, and mobile
applications to optimize waste collection, transportation, and disposal processes.

The traditional waste management system is plagued by inefficiencies, including

overflowing waste bins, irregular collection schedules, and lack of transparency.
The Smart Waste Management System seeks to address these challenges by
providing a smart, efficient, and sustainable solution for waste management.

The rapid urbanization and population growth in cities have led to an increase in
waste generation, posing significant environmental and health challenges. The
traditional waste management system is struggling to keep pace with the growing
waste management needs.

Typically smart waste management system has to do with connecting devices to be

monitored in a central hub from which a user access the system from either a well
mounted terminals, tablet, PC, a mobile phone application or a web interface. This
may also be accessible off-site through the internet.

Essentially, this project prototype is design to perform some waste management

viz; monitoring the waste level in the waste bin and also detect waste. Making it
easy for the user to know the waste level in the bin and time for disposal. Here the
user will be notify through GSM module and also perform the operation of
monitoring the waste bin through mobile browser (Android Application) connected
to a cloud network( internet), from where he/she communicate to a microcontroller
(Arduino) mounted in the waste bin that performs all the smart operations.

1.2 Statement of Project

The existing waste management system in urban areas faces several challenges
including; inefficient waste collection and disposal, lack of real-time monitoring of
waste and environmental and health impacts of improper waste disposal. In most
cases, the system and designs available cannot meet these needs or too costly to
purchase. Consequently there is the need to provide solution to the problem
effectively design machinery to provide waste management, reduce cost in waste
disposal and also reduce the health risk of personnel's.

1.3 Research Questions

i. How can IoT sensors and data analytics be used to optimize waste collection
and transportation processes?

ii. What is the impact of the Smart Waste Management System on reducing
waste disposal costs and environmental pollution?

iii. How can the Smart Waste Management System improve citizen engagement
and participation in waste management?

1.4 Aim

The Aim of this project is to construct a microcontroller based waste management

system using GSM alerts and internet of things (IoT)
1.5 Objectives

1. To design and assemble the various devices and components required for
developing a Smart waste management system

2. To develop a c++ code programming language to interface the sensors, relay

,GSM alerts and a mobile all to the microcontroller and connect them to
internet

3. To synchronize both the mechanical, electrical and the communication

components as a system that will effectively carryout the operation.

1.6 Scope of Project

A Smart waste management system leveraging GSM alerts and internet of things
offers a wide scope, which encompasses real-time monitoring of waste bin fill
levels, optimized collection routes, and improved resource allocation, ultimately
leading to more efficient and sustainable waste management practices.

In this project we are constructing a model waste management system that is

capable of monitoring the bin fill level and sending alert through GSM and internet
,ultrasonic sensor that will senses the waste and also the bin fill level. It will
involve the use of GSM module and a Wi-Fi module that communication can be
done through GSM alerts and internet of things and from any part of the through a
microcontroller (ESP32). The monitoring and notification will be done directly
from mobile app installed on the user's mobile phone.

1.7 Significance of the Project

The benefits of this waste management system, a smart waste management system
can never be over emphasized. It has the advantage of optimizes waste collection,
reduces environmental impact, improves efficiency, and enhances resource
allocation, ultimately contributing to cleaner and healthier cities. Having this at
homes and offices alleviate the worry of uncertainty of the state of working to
check if the bin is filled up and ready for disposal.
