Copy of Option 3- Projector

The document outlines a final evaluation project for a physics class focused on building a smartphone projector in groups of up to three. Students are tasked with researching, constructing, and testing the projector while applying optics concepts and reflecting on their learning experience. The project includes guidelines for collaboration, safety, and a rubric for assessment based on communication, application of concepts, and individual reflection.

Optics End of Unit Project- Smartphone Projector

This physics practical lab project will be your final evaluation for physics. You will be working in
max groups of 3 for this summative culminating task.

Learning Goal:
✓ Student will evaluate the effectiveness of technological devices and procedures designed to make
use of light, and assess their social benefits
✓ Student will investigate, through inquiry, the properties of light, and predict its behaviour,
particularly with respect to reflection in plane and curved mirrors and refraction in converging
lenses

How to Build The Ultimate Smartphone Projector

How to Build The Ultimate Smartphone Projector
Watch the video link below on how to build a projector:

Remember to practice all laboratory safety procedures

during the execution of this practical project!

Task:
1. Research what a Smartphone Projector is and how you will create it. Be sure to record all of the
references you use in APA format.Research and list all materials needed for building a smartphone
projector. Identify and gather necessary tools for assembly.
2. Divide the work based on Your research.
3. Construction of smartphone projector: Divide research findings among group members to
streamline the construction process. Assign responsibilities for assembling different components.

Testing
4. Conduct initial tests to ensure the smartphone projector is light-tight and functional.
5. Make necessary adjustments for optimal performance.

Capturing Images
6. Select a suitable environment for capturing images.
7. Experiment with different lighting conditions and subjects.
8. On a separate piece of paper, draw all the necessary ray diagrams to show how the light travels
from in your project.
9. Make sure everything on the diagram is labelled.

Individual Personal Reflection (this will be submitted individually)

1. List at least two course concepts from the optics unit which apply to your project. Define each
concept and explain how it was used in your project.
2. While building these projects we are limited due to many factors including cost, space and tools
etc. If you had an unlimited budget and could buy any material you wished, give examples of two
ways that you could improve your optics project so that it would be even better?
Optics Design Thinking Project Plan
Describe your model. What is its function? How does it use mirrors, lenses and/or lights/sensors?

How might the tool that you design benefit the society and the environment?

What materials will you need to create your model?

Draw a labeled sketch of your model - use an additional page for more space. If you wish, you can use
tinkercad.com to design your model before you build it. Depending on resources available and the
time, you may choose to 3D print some components of your model, if needed.

Optional High Tech Integration: How will you use micro:bits? What purpose might the
lights/sensors/other input/out features serve in your machine/tool?
