QUESTIONS TAG
Part 1: Explanation

A question tag is a short question added at the end of a statement to confirm or


check information.

Rules:

1. If the main sentence is positive, the question tag is negative.

2. If the main sentence is negative, the question tag is positive.

3. Use the same auxiliary/modal verb from the main sentence.

4. If there is no auxiliary verb, use do/does/did.

Examples:

• You rarely eat fast food, do you?

• He hardly knew the answer, did he?

• They ought to respect the rules, oughtn’t they?

• He had better apologize, hadn’t he?

• Let’s review the material, shall we?

• I am not your stepmother, are

Exercise 1: Complete the Tag Questions

Fill in the blanks with the correct tag question.

Exercise 2: Rewrite the Sentences with Tag Questions

Example: You like chocolate. → You like chocolate, don’t you?
