Women Leaders
Women Leaders
unyielding passion for education. Growing up in a society where leadership roles, particularly in
academia and administration, were predominantly male-dominated, I often felt the absence of role
models who mirrored my aspirations. Despite these challenges, I saw education as the ultimate
equalizer, a force powerful enough to overcome barriers and uplift not just individuals but entire
communities.
The inspiration for this path began early in my career, as I experienced firsthand the transformative
impact of quality education on students’ lives. It began with small milestones—my first teaching
appointment, then followed by significant strides in research and administrative roles. Over time, I
realized that leadership was not just about individual achievement but about empowering others to
achieve their fullest potential. Breaking barriers became a natural extension of my work; each
accomplishment inspired me to challenge the status quo further, whether it was creating platforms
for women in leadership or internationalizing our academic programs.
One of the key milestones was stepping into the role of Dean of the School of Business
Administration. It was here that I had the opportunity to reimagine curricula, foster cross-cultural
collaborations, and address gender disparities within academia. These experiences taught me the
importance of resilience, adaptability, and empathetic leadership. My ascent to the Vice-
Chancellorship of Sharda University in Agra was a culmination of these experiences, providing a
platform to inspire others and drive institutional excellence.
Breaking barriers in this field required boldness and a readiness to take calculated risks. For example,
initiating international partnerships involved navigating cultural differences, building trust, and
aligning diverse objectives. It also meant advocating for policies that promote diversity and inclusivity
within the academic ecosystem. What sustained me through these challenges was the unwavering
belief that education is a gateway to empowerment, particularly for women and marginalized
communities. Each success, whether big or small, reaffirmed my commitment to this mission.
Integrity lies at the heart of leadership. It means staying true to our mission and ensuring
transparency and accountability in all processes. Integrity fosters trust, which is essential for building
a cohesive organization where individuals feel safe to express themselves and contribute their best.
Inclusivity has always been a guiding force in my career. As a leader, I strive to create an environment
where every voice matters. Whether it's faculty members, students, or administrative staff, their
perspectives and contributions are valued. This inclusive approach helps us harness diverse
viewpoints, leading to innovative solutions and fostering a sense of belonging within the institution.
Lastly, resilience defines both my journey and that of our institution. Navigating challenges such as
the shift to online learning during the pandemic required not only adaptability but also the
determination to emerge stronger. By staying grounded in these principles, we have created a culture
of excellence that continues to inspire and impact everyone involved.
One way we ensure agility is by cultivating a mindset of lifelong learning among our faculty, staff, and
students. This involves staying attuned to global trends through regular knowledge-sharing sessions,
conferences, and industry partnerships. For example, we established dedicated research centers
focused on emerging disciplines such as AI, biotechnology, and sustainability. These centers not only
keep us at the forefront of innovation but also provide valuable insights that shape our academic and
administrative strategies.
Technology plays a critical role in maintaining agility. By integrating advanced digital tools into our
operations—from learning management systems to data analytics for decision-making—we are able
to streamline processes and respond swiftly to changing needs. Innovation is further driven by our
commitment to fostering creativity. Regular hackathons, innovation challenges, and incubation
programs empower students and faculty to experiment and innovate.
Above all, we remain grounded in our mission to create positive societal impact. This mission acts as a
compass, ensuring that our agility and innovation are purpose-driven rather than trend-focused. By
staying true to our values while embracing change, we not only lead but also inspire others to follow.
One of the key strategies I employ is open communication. Regular interactions and feedback sessions
ensure that every team member’s voice is heard. This not only helps me understand their aspirations
but also creates a sense of ownership and accountability among them. Transparency in decision-
making further reinforces trust and fosters a collaborative culture.
Mentorship, for me, goes beyond professional guidance; it involves holistic development. I actively
work with my team to identify their growth areas and provide them with opportunities to enhance
their skills. This could include recommending relevant training programs, assigning challenging
projects, or connecting them with external experts. Recognizing and celebrating achievements, no
matter how small, is another way I inspire my team. Positive reinforcement boosts morale and
encourages continued excellence.
Stakeholder engagement lies at the core of our strategy. Regular interactions with students, parents,
industry partners, and alumni provide valuable insights into their expectations and evolving needs.
These insights inform our decision-making, ensuring that our programs and initiatives remain relevant
and impactful. For instance, the introduction of skill-based certifications and industry-aligned courses
is a direct result of feedback from employers seeking job-ready graduates.
Operational excellence is driven by our commitment to quality and efficiency. We employ data-driven
approaches to monitor and enhance performance across all levels. Key performance indicators (KPIs)
are established for each department, providing clear benchmarks against which progress can be
measured. Continuous improvement is encouraged through regular audits, feedback loops, and
professional development programs for staff.
At the same time, we ensure that our operations align with our institutional values. Ethical practices,
sustainability, and inclusivity are integrated into every aspect of our work. This alignment not only
enhances our credibility but also strengthens our relationships with stakeholders, fostering trust and
collaboration. By maintaining a clear focus on our vision while addressing operational demands, we
consistently deliver outcomes that exceed stakeholder expectations.
The vision behind CIISS was to break away from traditional academic silos and encourage
collaboration across disciplines. Under this initiative, faculty and students from engineering, business,
social sciences, and environmental studies worked together on real-world problems. For instance, one
project involved the development of low-cost, solar-powered irrigation systems, which benefited
small-scale farmers in rural India while promoting sustainable agriculture.
Inclusivity was a key aspect of this initiative. We ensured representation from diverse groups,
including women and underprivileged students, and provided them with opportunities to contribute
to and lead innovative projects. Partnerships with international universities and NGOs further
enriched the learning and research ecosystem, enabling cross-cultural and interdisciplinary
collaborations.
Sustainability was central to the initiative’s goals. Each project at CIISS was evaluated based on its
environmental, social, and economic impact. The center’s work not only advanced knowledge in
critical areas but also demonstrated the university’s commitment to creating a sustainable and
equitable future. By fostering innovation and inclusivity, the CIISS initiative has made a lasting impact,
serving as a model for academic institutions worldwide.
Harnessing Emerging Tech with Human Focus :-
Harnessing emerging technologies is vital for staying relevant in today’s competitive landscape, but it
is equally important to ensure that technology serves human needs rather than overshadowing them.
At Sharda University, we have adopted a balanced approach that integrates technological
advancements with a human-centric perspective.
One example of this approach is our use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to personalize learning
experiences. Through adaptive learning platforms, we analyze students’ progress and tailor course
materials to suit their individual needs. This not only enhances learning outcomes but also ensures
that students receive the support they need to succeed. Despite the reliance on AI, the human
element remains critical, with faculty members playing an active role in mentoring and guiding
students.
In research, we leverage technologies such as data analytics, machine learning, and IoT to address
societal challenges. Projects like smart city planning and predictive healthcare analytics exemplify
how technology can be used to improve the quality of life. At the same time, we ensure that ethical
considerations and social impacts are integral to these initiatives, fostering a sense of responsibility
among researchers and students.
To maintain a human-centric approach, we emphasize the importance of soft skills, empathy, and
ethical decision-making in our curriculum. Workshops on digital ethics, along with interdisciplinary
projects, prepare students to use technology responsibly. By blending technological innovation with a
commitment to human values, we have ensured that our institution remains at the forefront of
progress while staying true to its mission.
Inclusivity begins with recruitment. We actively seek diverse talent, ensuring representation across
gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Beyond recruitment, inclusivity is reinforced
through policies that promote equity, such as flexible work arrangements, childcare support, and
mentorship programs for underrepresented groups. Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) provide
platforms for individuals to connect, share experiences, and advocate for positive change.
Skill development is another cornerstone of our approach. We offer comprehensive training programs
tailored to the needs of faculty and staff. From technical workshops on emerging technologies to
leadership development programs, these initiatives ensure that employees remain competitive and
fulfilled in their roles. Additionally, opportunities for advanced education and international exchange
programs enable personal and professional growth.
Collaboration and open communication are essential for fostering a positive work culture. Regular
town hall meetings, feedback sessions, and team-building activities create a sense of community and
alignment with institutional goals. By prioritizing inclusivity, growth, and engagement, we have built a
workforce that not only thrives individually but also contributes collectively to our mission of
excellence.
Our response was guided by resilience and creativity. First, we established a dedicated task force to
manage the transition. This team collaborated with technology partners to implement a robust
Learning Management System (LMS) and provided extensive training for faculty members to adapt to
online teaching. Recognizing that many students faced connectivity issues, we developed offline
resources and flexible learning schedules to ensure inclusivity.
Creativity played a key role in maintaining student engagement. Virtual labs, interactive webinars,
and gamified learning modules were introduced to make online education more dynamic and
effective. We also prioritized mental health support, offering counseling services and wellness
programs to help students and staff navigate the emotional toll of the pandemic.
The experience not only strengthened our digital capabilities but also fostered a culture of innovation
and resilience. It demonstrated that with the right mindset and teamwork, even the most daunting
challenges can be transformed into opportunities for growth.
One of our flagship initiatives is the AI and Data Science Lab, which serves as a hub for research and
learning. Here, students and faculty collaborate on projects ranging from predictive analytics for
healthcare to AI-driven optimization in supply chain management. These hands-on experiences equip
them with practical skills that are highly valued in the industry.
Cybersecurity is another area of focus. As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, we have
integrated cybersecurity modules into our curriculum and partnered with industry leaders to provide
certifications. Additionally, we use advanced cybersecurity tools to protect institutional data, ensuring
a safe digital environment for our operations.
Beyond technical training, we emphasize the ethical and societal implications of these technologies.
Courses on AI ethics, privacy, and the impact of automation prepare our students to use these tools
responsibly. By incorporating advanced technologies into our academic and operational frameworks,
we are not only addressing current challenges but also shaping a workforce ready to navigate and lead
the industries of tomorrow.
Quantitatively, I assess success through key performance indicators (KPIs) such as student enrollment
numbers, graduation rates, faculty research output, and placement records. Increases in international
partnerships, citations in research publications, and industry collaborations serve as additional
benchmarks to gauge our growth and influence.
Qualitative measures are equally important in understanding the impact of my leadership. Regular
feedback from students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders provides insights into their
satisfaction levels and perceptions of organizational culture. Success stories of students who have
achieved their dreams or faculty who have advanced their careers through our programs validate the
effectiveness of my approach.
Another significant measure of success is the sustained alignment of the organization’s activities with
its mission and values. Whether introducing inclusive policies, fostering innovation, or leading
sustainability initiatives, the ability to create meaningful and lasting impact reflects the true essence
of leadership.
Ultimately, success is evident when I see empowered individuals achieving their fullest potential and
the institution as a whole thriving in an increasingly competitive and complex environment.
To achieve this legacy, I focus on fostering a culture of learning and collaboration. Each day, I make
deliberate efforts to empower others by providing opportunities for growth, recognizing their
contributions, and building an environment that values diversity. From spearheading initiatives that
address societal challenges to implementing policies that support underrepresented groups, I aim to
create pathways for success that extend beyond individual achievements.
Lastly, I strive to model the qualities I hope to see in others: integrity, compassion, and resilience.
Leading by example ensures that these values become deeply embedded in the organization's fabric,
shaping not only the present but also the future of the institution.
Each decision, interaction, and initiative is an opportunity to contribute to this legacy. By staying true
to our mission and nurturing a shared vision for the future, I work every day to leave behind an
institution that inspires, empowers, and transforms lives.
