Examination Paper № 0

1. This Paper consists of 2 Sections - A and B. Max. Points: 40

2. Duration: 120 minutes
3. Section A – open questions [12 p]
Section B – problems [28 p]
The allocation of marks within each question is shown in brackets in the right hand margin.
This examination represents 60% of the class assessment.

SECTION «A»
A1 Describe the procedure (sequence of actions) for determining the viscosity of the drilling fluid using a rotary
viscometer and a Marsh viscometer. Evaluate the effectiveness of the quantitative assessment of the rheological
properties (plastic viscosity, yield stress) of non-Newtonian flushing fluids obtained using two instruments.

[6]

A2 Describe in general terms, graphically and mathematically the: Newtonian; Power Law and Bingham Plastic
rheological models.

[6]

SECTION «B»
B1 Cement volume calculations. Determine:
1. The volume of cement
2. The required number of sacks of cement
3. The volume of mixwater required
4. The volume of displacement
5. Top of the spacer
6. Hydrostatic pressure generated during the cementing operations.
Task: The 13 3/8” intermediate casing string of a well is to be cemented in place with a lead and tail cement. The
details of the operation are as follows:
20” previous casing set at 3100'
13 3/8" casing set at: 8200',
17 1/2" hole: 8210'
Float collar set at 8140’
Assume gauge hole, add 20% excess in open hole
Tail cement (8200-6200 ft.) Lead cement (6200-3100 ft.)
Slurry density :16 ppg Slurry density :13.6 ppg
Yield :1.18 ft3/sk Yield :1.75 ft3/sk
3
Mixwater requirements :0.57 ft sk Mixwater requirements :1.25 ft3sk
Precede cement with 15 bbls of 10.5 ppg brine as a spacer.
Displacement is fresh water to the float collar.

B2 Whilst drilling the 8 1/2" hole section of a well the mud pit level indicators indicate that
the well is flowing. When the well is made safe the following information is collected:

Drillpipe pressure = 120 psi
Casing pressure = 90 psi
Pit gain = 9 bbls
Using this and the information provided in attachment 1 carry out the necessary
calculations to determine (read section 5 before attempting items c,d and e below):
a The formation pressure and kill mudweight
b The type of influx
c The time to kill the well
