Sketching

The lecture emphasizes the importance of sketching in engineering, highlighting that graphical communication is often more effective than verbal descriptions. It covers various types of freehand drawing, including single view, pictorial, and multi-view sketches, as well as the significance of proportions and orthographic sketching. Additionally, it introduces different types of lines used in technical drawings, such as visible, hidden, and center lines.

Technical Drawing

 Why learn technical drawing?

1. Universal Language; Many people understand graphics more
easily than words
2. Engineers from different fields can communicate more effectively
3. Helps in presenting complicated ideas
4. Visualizes ideas in 3-dimensions
5. Speeds up the communication between people working on a
project in industries between different countries/locations.

Freehand Drawing

 Often referred to as sketching

 Doesn’t need advance instruments; just a pencil, eraser,
and a paper.
 Designers develop their ideas by making several sketches
before arriving at the final solution.

Proportions

 Proportion allows the

designer to use
approximate values to
create a balanced
looking object.

 Relative proportion of
an object is more
important than its
actual physical size.

Types of Freehand Drawing

 Single View

 Objects with three dimensions

 Multi-view
 Separated, single orthographic
views oriented in adjacent Single View
related positions to describe
an object completely

View of Objects

 3 principle dimensions: Width + Height + Depth

 Any one view of a three-dimensional object shows only
two dimensions, the third dimension is found in an
adjacent view
 Orthographic sketching shows 2 of the 3-dimensions

Orthographic Sketching

 Sometimes different objects may have the same top and

front views. In such cases, the side view is needed to
identify the object completely.

Orthographic Sketching

 Some objects, such as cylindrical or symmetrical objects,

may require only 2 views

Types of Lines

Dr. Fadi Aloul Page 21
Types of Lines

 Visible Lines
 Solid lines used for visible edges

 Hidden Lines
 Medium dashed lines used for invisible edges

 Center Lines
 Shows the theoretical perfect center of arcs, holes, and cylinders.
They can be used to show symmetry, or used to aid in
dimensioning an object.

Types of Lines

 When different types of lines coincide, some lines have

priorities (or precedence) over others:
 First priority – visible lines
 Second priority – hidden lines
 Third priority – center lines
