QUESTION ONE (30 marks)

a) In view of Management Information Systems concepts distinguish between the


following (10 marks)
(i) Closed versus Open systems
(ii) Tactical decisions versus Strategic decisions
(iii) Systems requirements versus Systems specifications
(iv) Relational database (flat file) versus Hierarchical database
(v) Administrative controls versus System controls
b) Given that Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) are very important in an
organization; explain meaning of a TPS, its features and give typical examples of
TPS systems in supermarket. (5 marks)
c) An Information Systems is said to comprise of hardware, software, people
(liveware), data and procedures. Discuss each of these components in brief with
appropriate examples. (5 marks)
d) An organization can adopt an Information System so as to gain competitive
advantage. Discuss the strategic role of an information system in an organization.
(5 marks)
e) Discuss characteristics of MIS at various levels of management; hence identify the
suitable MIS systems for those levels of management. (5 marks)

a) Utumishi SACCO has noted a problem of long queues for the last three months and
customers have been complaining bitterly. You have been recently hired as the
General Manager and the Board of Management has called upon you to resolve this
matter. Explain how you would use Systems Approach to resolve this problem.

commerce
(v) SMTP server and POP server
b) Briefly explain the concept of data security and various risks to data and the
necessary measures to safeguard an organization against these risks. (10 marks)

a) An information system should help an organization manage its daily operations and
also to develop strategically. Explain how an information system will help an
organization develop strategically (5marks).
b) Discuss any three different types of information systems (5 marks).
c) Discuss the challenges posed by internet to a global sales force (5 marks).
d) Discuss the importance of ergonomics as applied to information systems (5 marks).

identify the various hardware and software requirements for computerizing the
organizations operations. (5 Marks)
b) Briefly explain the stages of Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). (5 Marks)
c) Explain two reasons that have led to slow growth of information societies in
developing nations (4 Marks)
d) Many organizations are opting to use mobile phones for their business processes.
Outline three challenges that they would face from this approach. (2 Marks)
e) Distinguish between executive information system and decision support system as
used in Management Information Systems. (4 Marks)
