Pulse Generator using 555

The document outlines the design and construction of a pulse generator circuit using the IC 555 in astable mode. It includes the theory of pulse signals, the operation of the IC 555, and a detailed procedure for setting up the circuit, measuring pulse widths, and comparing calculated values with measured results. The document also provides formulas for calculating the time periods of the pulse wave and includes sections for observations and results.

Pulse Generator using IC 555

Aim: To design and construct a Pulse generator circuit using IC 555 in astable mode.
Apparatus: IC 555, breadboard, resistors, capacitors, 0-15 V variable power supply, DMM, DSO,
single strand wires for connection.

Theory:
a) Pulse signal: A pulse is a rapid, transient change
in the amplitude of a signal from a baseline value
to a higher or lower value, followed by a rapid
return to the baseline value.
A square wave with a very small duty cycle will
result in pulse wave. The TON is known as the
Pulse-width and the total time period of the
pulse wave is given as
T = TON + TOFF.

b) IC 555: The LM555 is a highly stable device for

generating accurate time delays or oscillation. It
operates in both Astable and Monostable Modes. To
operate an oscillator, the free running frequency and
duty cycle are accurately controlled with two
external resistors and one capacitor.

Pin diagram of IC 555

Circuit diagram: IC 555 connected in Astable mode.
Procedure:
Part 1:
1) Connect the circuit IC 555 in Astable mode on the breadboard using suitable valuables for
R1, R2, & C.
2) Calculate the TON and TOFF. Also calculate the total time-period of the oscillator.
3) Set the power supply on 9V and connect it to the circuit. Turn on the power supply.
4) Using DSO, measure the TON & TOFF. total time-period of the oscillator. Compare it with the
calculated values.
5) Trace the wave forms at output and trigger pin of the circuit.
Part 2:
1) Calculate the values of R1, R2, & C for very long time periods of the order of few seconds.
2) Replace the old R1, R2, & C with the new values and connect and LED with a series resistor
in the output.
3) Turn ON the circuit and measure the ON time and OFF time of the led using a stop watch.
4) Compare it with the expected result.
Formulae:
1) TON = 0.693 (R1 + R2) C
2) TOFF = 0.693 (R2C)
3) T = TON + TOFF
Observations:

Part 2
