Abstract
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) analyses the application of the most recent WSN tech-
nology in wireless monitoring for coal mine safety. This includes transmission routing
protocols, location algorithms, and WSN technologies. The intelligent monitoring sys-
tem design and mechanisms for coal mine safety are analyzed, presenting solutions to
enhance system intelligence.

Introduction
Underground mining operations pose significant risks to worker safety and health due
to varying extraction methods and the inherent dangers of deeper mines. In India, coal
remains a vital energy source for rapid industrial growth, accounting for over 70% of power
generation. Despite its benefits, it raises safety and environmental concerns, necessitating
real-time monitoring systems using technologies like LoRa.

Aim of the Project

The primary aim of this project is to enhance safety in coal mines by continuously mon-
itoring critical parameters like temperature, gas concentration, humidity, and fire detec-
tion.

Objectives
ˆ Design and implement hazard detection systems inside coal mines.

ˆ Monitor critical environmental parameters (methane gas levels, temperature, hu-

midity) in real time.

ˆ Enable real-time alerts and notifications using LoRa networks during emergencies.

ˆ Collect and analyze historical data to improve safety protocols.

ˆ Automatically trigger alarms and notifications for hazardous conditions.

Methodology
The methodology involves:

1. System Design: Divided into transmitter and receiver units. The transmitter,
worn by miners, collects data using sensors and an ESP32 camera. The receiver in
the control room displays real-time data.

2
2. Data Collection: Sensors collect environmental parameters like temperature, hu-
midity, and gas levels.

3. Data Transmission: LoRa technology ensures reliable, low-power, long-distance

communication.

4. Alert Mechanism: Alerts are triggered when unsafe conditions are detected. The
ESP32 camera captures the environment, sending images via email.

5. Data Analysis: ThingSpeak IoT platform aggregates and visualizes data for trend
analysis.

6. Software Implementation: The Arduino IDE is used for programming. ThingS-

peak enables remote data monitoring.
