04 – Creativity tools for innovation & ideation methodologies

28.03.2022 THY innovation speaker

Adjacent possible – solutions that worked for other companies
Innovation Management is also about tracking achievements and spreading them around.
Listen and reflect – looking at similar options and looking for ideas that could be also converted.
Innovations come from ideas and shocks or systematic change
Brainstorming – requires a moderator or it’s not brainstorming. There are no criticisms & no
rewarding ideas. It requires a small group and informal speech.
Steps of Brainstorming
1. Prepare the group
2. Present the problem
3. Guide the discussion
Quality Management –is an approach that each aviation company has to have. There are 12
different tools in quality, 6 old and 6 new. It helps visualise data.
6 thinking hats are about changing the point of view and changing people’s minds.
Design thinking –simultaneously considers what is desirable, what is feasible, and what is
viable.
- Inspiration, ideation and implementation are at design thinking’s core.
Design thinking steps
 Empathy – learn about the audience you are designing for.
 Define – redefining and focus the question
 Ideate – brainstorming and coming up with creative questions
 Prototype – building a representation of one or more of your ideas
 Test – returning to the original user group and testing your ideas for feedback.
Understand – it ends in insight
Create – ends in ideas
Deliver – ends in reality
SCAMPER – problem-solving tool
 Substitute
 Combine
 Adapt
 Modify
 Put to another use
 Eliminate
 Reverse
TRIZ Algorithm
1. Define the Problem
2. Create Ideal Final Result
3. Determine the Differences
4. Create Ideality Equation
5. Determine Contradictions
6. Determine Input Parameters
7. Physical or Technical Contradiction
8. Determine General Solution
9. Examine Solutions
There are 39 parameters of TRIZ

06 – Process view of innovation

A structured approach with innovation management
Price is never the only decision-maker.
Innovation is about the added value.
Systematic and total innovation approach + Continuous efforts for idea generation, screening
and selection = Successful new product/ service development
Innovation is:
o About the generation of added value.
o A multi-stage process to differentiate in the marketplace.
o You can’t say I will innovate by myself while talking about a complex product.
o A process within the value chain.

Problem Statement & Solution

Innovation Management System (IMS)
Enables manages and rewards the continuous idea stream by defining the process for ideation
and the convergence of such innovative ideas into new products or processes.
Enables effective and timely new product/service development.
10 Most relevant categories for IMS
o Knowledge management techniques,
o Market intelligence techniques,
o Cooperative and networking techniques,
o Interference management techniques,
o Creativity development techniques,
o Process improvement techniques
o Innovative project management techniques,
o Design management techniques,
o Business creation techniques.

Innovation portfolio management supports sustainability.

The portfolio is fuzzy.
o Fuzzy means that it isn’t exact and can be changed. It also means that things are not
perfect.
Portfolio management goals
Correct allocation of limited sources.
Balance = other types of innovation are not related to social media.
Strategy vs Ideas
o Strategy, value and elimination of Knowledge

Innovation portfolio
The size of the bubbles (ideas) corresponds with the size of the project, and how much money
will be gained.
The closer you are to the ideas (in time), the closer to the certainty it goes up.
o Continuous tracking
o Focus vs diversity
o Short, medium & long term assessment,

Risk and the return

Risks: Incremental, Radical, Fundamental
Risk-reward bubble diagram
Pearls: Potential “star” projects
Oysters: success probability is low but the return is high if managed
Bread and Butter: simple projects, very easy, but low returns.
Market vs Capabilities
1 – Existing Market, existing capabilities
Short cycle fast solution
Low cost
Incremental enchantments
2 – Newmarket, existing capabilities
Existing solutions for new markets/tasks
Low-cost high impact
3 – Existing market, new capabilities
Acquire new capabilities
4 – Newmarket, new capabilities
Strategic bucket
Time horizon
Strategic things are long term
NEXT WEEK THERE IS A INNOVATION SPEAKER SPEECH THAT WILL START AT 10 AM
idi.
Türk lirasının devalüasyonu birim maliyetlerini dolar üzerinden düşük tutulmasına yardımcı
oluyor, THY için.
2016 yılında THY inovasyon departmanı kuruldu.
Inovasyon THY tanımı: değer üreten yenilik
Inovasyon sadece THY inovasyon departmanı tarafından yapılmıyor, çalışan tüm herkes
yapıyor bu inovasyonlar departman tarafından koordine ediliyor.
Inovasyon ve yenilik arasındaki fark, inovasyonun değer üretmesidir.
Peter Drucker is the first person to talk about value creation.
THY: Değer üreten yenilik. (Firma için yeni, sektör için yeni, Endüstri için yeni, Pazar için yeni)
SOLID: Standardization, Optimization, Lineerleşme, İzlenebilirlik, Dijitalleşme
Unique motivation for the associates where you can talk with the supervisors and assistant
supervisors, propose something to them, and present your ideas. – Inspired by Japanese
innovation systems.
(It was done until the pandemic)
Innovation Project Portfolio – Turkish airlines has been better than Turkey in general from an
economic standpoint – self-criticism
The lower segment is the existing market and the upper market is the market they don’t serve.
The right part is the existing technology in use. The best part to be in is the middle and the
higher left and lower right in this segment, like Lufthansa.
Since THY is the only Turkish carrier that is not a low-cost carrier and they don’t have any
competition. So they decided to talk with the international carriers and talked about their
innovations and collaborated with them about the innovations they might use. – Self-check-in
kiosks in Istanbul Airport.
THY – Markalar İnovasyon Çalıştayı
Cross-fertilization is the most important part of innovation where the companies work with other
companies that are from another industry and work together to innovate.
Open / University Collaboration Innovation Example: With open collaboration with Boğaziçi
University they discussed using alternative fuels, they worked out the solutions, recently they
succeeded in algae fuel and soon they will be using them in flights.
Internal IMS (Kurum içi fikir geliştirme)
Design Thinking – Human Centered Design
o Ne? – diğerlerinin hisleri
o Nasıl? – önyargısız, acemice, merakla
o Neden? – açıkladıkları ve gizledikleri ihtiyaçlar

Empethise, Define, Idea, Prototype, Test

09 – Innovation for sustainability in aviation
