Oring and Seals - DataSheet

The document provides general information about the seals used in CPI's products, detailing the specific compounds used, such as HNBR, NBR, and Viton, along with their temperature ranges and chemical resistance. It also outlines storage recommendations to ensure optimal shelf life of the seals, which can be up to 10 years under proper conditions. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of stock rotation and proper disposal of expired seals.

The following infbnnation is general in nature and subject to change without notice.
Fu(hennore, specific applications and service requirements may require special seals and
compounds and should be discussed with CPI Engineering.

G eneral Considerations :

All seals used in CPI's products are made fiom special compounds consisting of a base
polyrner/elastomer mixed with other chernicais to provide the required sealing properiies whiie
nraintaining their integrity' during contact with aggressive media specific to oil and gas
industry.

Comnounds:
Due to these specific environments in which CPI's products must perform the O-rings and
wireline valve seals are made fi'om the following compounds:

HYDROGENATED NITRILE (.HNBR- HSN) - Synthetic polymer that results from the
hydrogenation of nitrile rubber (NBR). During this process the carbon-carbon double bonds in
the NBR primary polymer chain thus improving the material's thermal stability and oxidation
resistance. HNBR compounds possess superior rnechanical characteristics, particularly higher
strength.
'femperature Ranges: -31 oC to l59oC (-25oF
to 300oF;

Chemical Resistance:
r Aliphatichydrocarbons
o HFA, HFB and HFC fluids
o Dilute acids, bases and salt solutions at rnoderate temperatures
o Warer and steam up to l49oC(300oF)
r H2S resistance up to l0%
o Petroleum oils and CO2

Not compatible with:

o ChlorinatedHydrocarbons
o Polar solvents
. Strong acids

ACRYLOMTRILE-BUTADIENE (NBR/Buna-N) - Acrylonitrile'butadiene terpolyrner. The

acrylonitrile content of ninile sealing compounds varies considerably (18 to 50 %). Polymers
with higher ACN content exhibit less swell in gasoline and aromatic solvents, while lower
ACN polymers exhibit better compression set and low temperature flexibility.

Temnerature Ranses: -40oC to l20oC (-40oF to 248oF)

Chemical Resistance:
r Aliphatichydrocarbons
r HFA, HFB and HFC fluids
r Dilute acids, alkali and salt solutions at low temperatures
o Water

Not compatible with:

o Fuels of high aromatic content
o Aromatichydrocarbons
o Chlorinatedhydrocarbons
o Polar solvents
o Strong acids
e Brake fluid with glycol base
o Ozone

VITON@ - FLUOROCARBON GKM): Fluorocarbon (FKM) has excellent resistance to high

temperatures, ozone, oxygen, mineral oil, synthetic hydraulic fluids, fuels, aromatics and many
organic solvents and chernicals. Special FKM compounds exhibit an improved resistance to
acids and fuels.

TemLerature Ranges: -20oC to 200oC (-4oF to 392oF)

Low temperature resistance is normally not favorable and for static applications is
limited to approximately -26'C (-15"F) although certain compounds are suitable
down to -46'C (-50'F). Under dynamic conditions, the lowest service temperature is
between -15"C and -18'C (5oF and OoF). Gas penneability is very low and similar to
that of butyl rubber.

Chemical Resistance:
o Mineral oil and grease, ASTM oil #1, and IRM902 and IRM903 oils
r HDF fluids (non-flarnmable hydraulic fluids)
o Silicone oil and gtrease
o Aliphatic hydrocarbons (butane, propane, natural gas)
e Alomatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene)
o Chlorinated hydrocarbons (trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride)
o Gasoline (including high alcohol content)
o High vacuuul
r Very good ozone, weather and aging resistance

o Low molecular weight organic acids (formic and acetic acids)

Storase - Shelf Life:

The effective storage life of a seal varies with the inherent resistance of each individual
elastomer to normal-storage conditions. The reference document used to specifu the shelf life
is
ARp 5316 which is an Aerospace Recommended Practice and not a standard that must be met"
Based on ARP 5316 and CPI;s seal supplier's recommendations, the shelf life of O-rings and
seals is l0 years from the time of cure, when cure date is available, or l0 Years from the date
of purchase if the following storage conditions are maintained:

1. Ambient temperature not exceeding 49oC (120"F)

2. Humidity should be less than 7 Sa/o if seals are not stored in sealed moisture proof bags.
3. Exclusion of contamination
4. Exclusion of light (particularly sunlight). use black bags for storage.
5. Exclusion of omne generating electrical devices
6. Exclusion of radiation

Generally, sealed polyethylene bags stored in larger cardboard containers or polyethylene line^d
craft paper bags ensure optimal storage life. However, in normal warehousing conditions, life
of even the relatively age-sensitive elastomers is considerable.

Stock rotqtion: should follow the FIFO rule (First In - First Out) so that the most recent
manufactured seals remain in inventory

Discarding of seals: When storage life expired the seals should be removed from inventory and
destoyed.
