Part 3: Small Talk

• Small talk is polite conversation about things that are not important, often between
people who are meeting for the first time (who don’t know each other well).
• Interest is the thing that you want to learn more about or topics you like to talk about.
• Hometown is the town or city that a person is from, especially the one in which they
were born and lived while they were young.

Hello! My name is Yarinda. The name of my province is Samut Prakan.
It is very near Bangkok. Many tourists come to visit our province every
day to see the Crocodile Farm and the Ancient City. At the farm you can
see crocodile wrestling and elephant shows. I like to go there with my family during the
holidays. You can sit on a train and go all around the farm. They have many different kinds of
animals there. Another place I like to visit during the holidays is the Ancient City. You can
rent a bicycle and ride around all day. Sometimes we take a picnic and eat under the trees.
The most famous temple in our province is called Phra Samut Chedi. This used to be on a
small island in the middle of the Chao Phraya River. But now it is on the west bank. Finally,
my favorite place is Bang Pu Seaside Resort. There is a pier here where you can walk out
over the Gulf of Thailand. The wind is very cool in the evenings and I sometimes go there
with my family to feed the seagulls.

Here are some ways to talk about personal interests and hometowns in English.
1. Talking about Interests and Hometowns
Saying what you like Saying your interest
• like + noun / ing form - be interested in + noun / ing
I like tennis. / I like playing tennis. I’m interested in reading book. /
• love + noun / ing form novel.
He loves football. / He loves watching football. - Interest (n.) is + ing form
• be keen on + noun / ing form My interest is going sightseeing.
She’s keen on the cinema. / going to the cinema. - be into + noun / ing form
• enjoy + noun / ing form I’m into films / watching films.
We enjoy sports / playing sports
Remember:
• I like (+ ing / noun) is for general likes. Adding emphasis:
I like going to the cinema. • You can add “very much” at the end
• I’d like to + verb is for a specific of the sentence.
occasion: I like tennis.
I’d like to go to the cinema next weekend. I like tennis very much.
• You can add “at all” to a negative
sentence if you don’t like something.
I don’t like cricket.
I don’t like cricket at all.
• You can add “really” or “quite”
after “I’m…” for emphasis.
I’m really keen on sports.

2. Question Types
2.1 Closed Questions (Yes/No questions) are those questions which the responder can
only reply to with ‘yes’ or ‘no’
Examples:
A: Are you from Nakhon Ratchasima?
B: Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.

We form closed questions using the following auxiliary verbs:


➢ is / am / are Is it far from here?
➢ do / does Do you live in town?
➢ has / have Have you been to Bangkok?
We can also use modal verbs:
➢ shall / should Shall we come with you?
➢ will / would Will they go there?
➢ can / could Can we visit the natural park?
➢ may / might May I visit your hometown tomorrow?
We use: auxiliary or modal verb + subject + ______________

Open questions encourage the responder to give a more detailed response. You can
then use the information provided to ask more questions.
