Plants

Definition:
Plants are living organisms that belong to the kingdom Plantae. They produce their
own food through photosynthesis and provide oxygen to the environment.

Classification of Plants:

Flowering Plants (Angiosperms):

Produce flowers and seeds enclosed in fruits.

Examples: Rose, mango tree, sunflower.

Non-Flowering Plants:

Do not produce flowers.

Examples: Ferns, mosses, pine trees.

Parts of a Plant and Their Functions:

Roots:

Anchor the plant in the soil.

Absorb water and minerals.

Store food (e.g., carrot, beetroot).

Stem:

Supports the plant.

Transports water, minerals, and food.

Stores food in some plants (e.g., sugarcane, potato).

Leaves:

Site of photosynthesis.

Contain chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight.

Help in transpiration (water loss through stomata).

Flowers:

Reproductive part of the plant.

Attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Fruits and Seeds:

Protect and help in the dispersal of seeds.

Seeds grow into new plants.

Processes in Plants:
Photosynthesis:

Process of making food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.

Equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O + Light → C6H12O6 + 6O2.

Respiration:

Plants break down glucose to release energy.

Transpiration:

Loss of water through leaves, helping in cooling and water movement.

Pollination and Fertilization:

Pollination: Transfer of pollen from anther to stigma.

Fertilization: Fusion of male and female gametes to form a seed.

Importance of Plants:

Provide oxygen and food.

Maintain ecological balance.

Used in medicine, timber, and paper industries.

Fun Fact:

The Amazon rainforest is known as the “lungs of the Earth” as it produces 20% of
the world's oxygen!
