Q11- In which direction freely suspended magnet rest? Do other materials like iron bar or plastic scale also comes
to rest in the same direction?

A- Afreely suspended magnet always comes to rest in the North-South direction.

No, any other material which is not magnet does not come to rest in N-S direction.

Q12- How to find directions using direction of rising sun?

A- Sun rises from the East direction. If we stand facing east, to our left will be North.
Opposite to North will be South and opposite to East will be West.
Q13- What is North pole and South pole of magnet?
A- The end of the magnet that points towards North is called its North seeking endor the North pole of the magnet.
The end of magnet that points towards the South is called South seeking endor the South pole of the magnet.
Q14- How were travellers used to find directions in old days?
A- Travellers used to find directions by suspending natural magnets with a thread, which they always carried with
them.

Q15- What is a compass?

A- Acompass is a device with a magnetic needle that is used to find directions.

Q16- How can we make our own compass?

A- 1. Magnetise an iron needle using a bar magnet. Now, insert the magnetised needle through a small piece of cork or
foam.
2. Let the cork float in water in a bowl or a tub. Make sure that the needle does not touch the water.
3. Your compass is now ready to work.
4. The cork with the magnetised needle rotates and finally comes to rest pointing in the N-S direction.

Q17- You are given two identical bars which look as if they might be made of iron. One of them is a magnet, while
the other is a simple iron bar. How willyou find out, which one is a magnet?
A- Bring some iron object or iron fillings close to both. The bar to which iron fillings or ion object got attracted is a
magnet. The bar to which iron fillings or iron object do not get attracted is a simple iron bar.

Q18- What will happen in following cases?

A- i.

Repulsion will occur between two magnets in this case because same poles of magnets repel each other.
i.

Attraction will occur between two magnets in this case because opposite poles of magnets attract each other.

Q19- How can magnets loose their properties?

A- Magnets loose their properties if they are:
i. heated,
ii. hammered or
iii dropped from some height
iv. if they are not stored properly, they become weak
Q20- How to keep magnets safe?
A- 1. Bar magnets should be kept in pairs with their opposite poles on the same side. Separate them by a piece of
wood in between and keep two pieces of soft iron at their ends.
2. For horse-shoe magnet, keep a piece of iron across the poles.
Q21- What are the uses of magnet?
A- 1. Magnets are used to separate iron materials from junk.
2. They are used to find directions.
3. They are used in pencil box, refrigerators or pin holders.
4. Used in TV., mobiles, computer, etc.

Q22- It is said to keep magnets away from devices like TV, Radio, computers, mobiles, etc. Why?
A- Devices like TV., computer, mobiles, etc. are made up of magnetic materials. So, if we bring a magnet near them, it
will damage and break these devices.

Q23- A tailor was stitching buttons on his shirt. The needle has slipped from his hand on to the floor. Can you
help the tailor to find the needle?
A- The needle can be found using a magnet because needle is a magnetic material so, it will get attracted towards the
magnet.
Q24- When we rub magnet in soil what happens?
A- When we rub magnet in soil, then small iron particles and iron fillings present in soil get attracted and stick to
magnet.

BACK EXERCISE
Q3-It was observed that a pencil sharpener gets attracted by boththe poles of a magnet although its body is made
of plastic. Name a material that might have been used to make some part of it.
A- Iron must have been used in some part of sharpener which is a magnetic material. So, it gets attracted to magnet.

Q5- Write any two properties of a magnet?

A- 1. Magnet has 2 poles- north and south pole.
2. Opposite poles of magnet attract each other and similar poles of magnet repel each other.
3. Afreely suspended magnet always comes to rest in North-South direction.
4. Magnet attract other iron objects.

Q6- Where are poles of a bar magnet located?

A- Done in extra question

Q7- A bar magnet has no markings to indicate its poles. How would you find out near which
end is its north pole located?
A- For finding out the North pole, take another bar magnet with known or marked poles. Bring the north pole of this
bar magnet close to both the unknown ends of another bar magnet. The end which shows repulsion will be the
North pole.

Q8- You are given an iron strip. How will you make it into a magnet?
Or
Q9- How can we make our own magnet?
A- 1. Take a rectangular piece of iron strip. Place it on the table.
2. Now take a bar magnet and place one of its poles near one edge of the bar of iron.
3. Without lifting the bar magnet, move it along the length of the iron bar till you reach the other end.
4. Now, lift the magnet and bring the pole (the same pole you started with) to the same point of the iron bar from
which you began.
5. Move the magnet again along the iron bar in the same direction as you did before. Repeat this process about 30-40
times.
6. Bring a pin or some iron filings near the iron bar to check whether it has become a magnet.

r s strip

Q10- How is a compass used to find directions?

Describe the structure of a compass and how it works?
A- 1. Acompass is usually a small box with a glass cover on it.
2. A magnetised needle is fitted inside the box, which can rotate freely.
3. The compass also has a dial with directions marked on it.
4. The compass is kept at the place where we wish to know the directions.
5. Its needle rotates and indicates the north-south direction when it comes to rest as marked on the dial.
6. To identify the north-pole of the magnetic needle, it is usually painted in a red colour.
