Task Sheet - Chemical Bonding Crit B and C
Name: Date:
You have learnt about the properties of ionic and covalent compounds that ionic compounds can conduct electricity
in molten or aqueous solution, but covalent compounds do not conduct electricity in any of these states. You wanted
to study the properties of some of the compounds which were available in chemistry lab but you were not sure of
the nature of the compound whether they are ionic or covalent compounds. Hence you decided to conduct the
experiment in the chemistry laboratory of your school with the permission of your teacher.
Assuming that you have conducted the experiment using Magnesium oxide, potassium bromide, sodium chloride,
glucose, and ethanol, design an experiment to show which substances are ionic and which substance is covalent.
Following set up can be used to check conductivity of substances.

How does the type of compound impact he electrical conductivity in an aqueous/molten solution?
b) Formulate and explain a testable hypothesis using correct scientific reasoning. (B ii)
c) List the variables and outline how will you manipulate them. (B iii)
IV : Type of compound (Magnesium oxide, potassium bromide, sodium chloride, glucose, and ethanol)
DV: Type of bond – Understood through electric conductivity
CV –
Volume of substance used
Voltage of power supply
Volume of distilled water
Temperature
Duration of electrical conductivity measurement
A student measured melting points of the elements of first group of the periodic table. She
measured their melting points using capillary method. The details of the method are given in the
video here.

She collected then data and presented in form of the graph given below.
(ii) Evaluate the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of the scientific investigation.
