1. All food chains begin with producers.
2. Plants use light energy of the sun to change water and carbon
dioxide into sugar and oxygen.
3.Plants absorb nutrients such as iron , magnesium and nitrates from
soil.
4. Substances which cause pollution are called pollutant.
5. Compost is formed when organic materials are broken down by
bacteria and worms.
6. Organisms which feed on primary consumers are called predators/
secondary consumers.
Q2. Give two examples of each:
1. Greenhouse gases carbon dioxide, methane
2. Diseases caused by air pollution asthma, bronchitis
3. Effects of deforestation fewer type of trees, animals lose their
habitat
4. Consumers deer, lion
Q3. Define:
Food web
All the interconnected and overlapping food chains in an
ecosystem make a food web.

Pest
An unwanted plant or an animal such as an insect that eats the
crop. Eg.stalk borer is a pest. It makes holes in the maize stalk.
Q4. Give reason:
a) Venus fly trap is called a predator plant.
Ans. The Venus Flytrap grows in soil which is poor in
nutrients. Though it can make its own food by
photosynthesis, it traps small insects and dissolves their soft
body parts. It uses the nutrients from their body to grow.

b) If we water a healthy plant with lemon juice, instead of water the plant
dies after a few days.
It is so because lemon juice contains acid which destroys the
nutrients present in the soil. As a result, the plant becomes weak
and dies after a few days.
Q5. The diagram of a food web is given. Answer the following
questions related to it.

a) Name two herbivores in the given food web rabbits, grasshoppers

b) Write two food chains containing atleast one predator and one prey.
Grains Mice Owl
Grasses rabbit foxes

c) What would happen to the number of mice if owls die of a disease?

Prediction
The number of mice would increase
Reason
It is so because Owls are the predator of mice
Q 6. Mention how each of these things can be
recycled or reused-
a) Aluminium cans
They can be recycled by Washing, Shredding, Melting, Reshaping
b) Plastic bottle
They can be reused for growing plants and making decorative
items
like wall hangings. They can also be recycled to make new

rainforests, there can be 1500 kinds of plants and 400
kinds of animals.
ii) Medicines- A lot of modern day medicines are made
from plants growing in the forests.
Q9. Make a pit in a warm place and add some biodegradable waste to it.
After a few weeks the compost will be ready.
a) What kind of waste can be added to the compost pit?
Give examples. Fruit and vegetable peels, dried leaves
b) Which micro organisms help to turn waste into compost?
Bacteria
c)Why is compost a better substitute to fertilizers?
