The document outlines an experiment to study the relationship between the force of limiting friction and normal reaction, as well as the coefficient of friction between a block and a horizontal surface. It details the apparatus needed, the procedure to follow, and the formulas used to calculate the limiting friction and normal reaction. Observations are to be recorded to plot a graph that demonstrates the direct proportionality of limiting friction to normal reaction.

[EXPERIMENT A-9]
Aim; To study the relationship between force of limiting friction and normal reaction and 1g
coefficient of friction between a block and a horizontal surface.
Apparatus
A plane wooden board with glass top, a wooden block provided with a hook, a pulley, a pan, a thread, a spring
‘weight box and spirit evel
Formula Used
(i) Fora given pair of surfaces in contact, the force of limiting friction f, is directly proportional to the normal reaction
(ii) The coefficient of limiting friction y, is given by

() Place the given wooden board with glass top horizontally and slightly projecting out ofthe table. Using spirit eve,
the glass top exactly horizontal.
‘Check that the pulley rotates freely. If necessary, lubricate it with some suitable oil.
(iii) Determine the least count and zero error, if any, in the spring balance. Find weight (W’) of the wooden block and
(P) of the pan.
(Gv) Tie one end of thread with the hook on the wooden block and the other end with the pan, Place the wooden block on th
horizontal table. Pass the thread over the pulley with pan hanging vertically down the able but without touching it. Te
part of the thread between the hook and the pulley must be horizontal,
