Introduction
As you move up to senior years of your high school, a lot of career orientations will take
place in your school or prospective senior high schools. These orientations will help you
explore plenty of options of career path you can consider in the future.

In this unit, you will explore the various health career paths that will lead you to participate
in a health career orientation program. With this, you will be able to select a particular
health career pathway based on your competence and interest and decide on your health
career path.

Lesson 1: Health Career Orientation Program

Learning Targets
In this lesson, you should be able to:
● explore the various health career paths;
● select a particular health career pathway based on personal competence and
interest;
● participate in a health career orientation program; and
● decide on the appropriate health career path.

Health Check
Health Career Orientation
As a grade 10 student, you probably are thinking about the career path you will take. There
will be a lot of career orientations you should participate in to help you decide on the career
path you will make in the coming years of your life. For this activity, you will join on a health
career orientation that will be held in your school. Then, select one health career path that
you will add on the list of your career options. Write it on a whole sheet of paper. Explain
why you chose your current choice.

Health career orientation program will help students to

make decisions on the career paths they can take related
to the healthcare field. In this lesson, you will learn the
essential details that you can gather in health career
orientation that you can reflect on in selecting the health career you would pursue.

Health Career Orientation is conducted by schools that offer medical courses to students.
When attending such programs, make sure to achieve the following goals:

● explored the options related to healthcare;

● match the healthcare profession to interests and competencies;
● get as much as needed information regarding the career option such as the learning
pathway and admission requirements;
● note the scholarships offered and its requirements; and
● make more in-depth research on the chosen healthcare career and the institution or
school that provides it.

Health career orientation program will enlighten the students on the reason on why to
pursue professions related to healthcare. The primary goal is that there is a higher demand
for healthcare due to rising health problems of the people. It is foreseen that more
health-related works will boosts so that advancement in the healthcare system can catch up
to the increasing demand for healthcare.

In terms of the healthcare profession, some qualities describe an individual that becomes a
healthcare practitioner. The list below outlines the traits of healthcare providers:

● caring and compassionate

● detail-oriented
● can advocate for others
● clear communicator
● accountable for one’s actions
● physically fit
● flexible and resilient
● emotionally stable
● sensitive to diversity
● problem solver
● uses good judgment

There are personal reasons for why an individual will pursue healthcare careers. Some find
these professions very rewarding as it satisfies one’s own needs and goals in reaching out to
other people. It could also make a difference by helping out other people especially those
who are underprivileged. These professions offer a considerable amount of salary that can
support a decent life. Some that do not want to contain their time resort to healthcare
professions as they could flex their schedules. There are many careers options in this field
as discussed in the previous unit. Also, some find the training shorter like two months to 2
years.

In the health career orientation, a preview on the courses to be taken and the expected
requirements from the sessions will also be detailed by the speakers. In most cases, the
requirements encompass clinical classroom visits, job shadowing, research paper, building
e-portfolio, and study and test-taking skills.

When it comes to the decision that healthcare career path is to be taken, make sure to have
a high level of commitment on finishing the chosen training program, develop sustainable
studying skills, and be responsible and active.

There are many employment options for these career paths. They can be employed in
hospitals, schools, nursing homes, clinics, rehabilitation centers, physician offices, industries,
mental health institutions, public health departments, home care, and military.
