Quarter 2 – Module 1:
Interpreting Information
Presented in a Pie Graph
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any
part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises.
2. Do not forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other
activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking
your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are done.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always

Let Us Learn

Are you ready for the next lesson? Before we start, here are the things
you are about to do in this lesson.

You are expected to:

1. interpret information from a pie graph (EN8SS-IIe-1.2);

2. construct a pie graph; and

3. value the essence of spending wisely through creating your

own pie graph in allocating expenses properly.

1
Let Us Try
In the past, you may have encountered pie graphs in the news,
articles, books, etcetera. Let us try to assess your previous knowledge
about it. Look at the pie graph below. Examine the information presented in
the pie graph. Analyze by answering the corresponding questions.

4. Based on the graph, is there any other device to use in accessing the
internet?
________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________
5. What is the difference (in percentage) between the users’ preference in
accessing the internet using a smartphone and a laptop?
________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________
The graph above shows the results of a survey in which people aged
sixteen and over were asked about their preferred devices for accessing the
internet. The question referred to going online at home and in other places.
The participants mentioned four main devices in their answers: a
smartphone, a laptop, a tablet, and a desktop computer.
From the pie graph, it is clear that the majority of the participants prefer
to use smartphones and laptops, with just three percent difference
between the two. Nearly a third of participants prefer to go online with a
smartphone. Thirty percent like to use a laptop. A desktop computer
accounts for fourteen percent of users’ preferred devices. Only a small
minority prefer a device other than these main four.

Let Us Study

Now that you have refreshed your previous knowledge about pie
graphs, let us discuss. What is a pie graph? What is it used for? Read the
selection below.

3
What is a pie chart?
A pie chart is a type of graph that displays data in a circular graph. The
pieces of the graph are proportional to the fraction of the whole in each
category. In other words, each slice of the pie is relative to the size of that
category in the group as a whole. The entire pie represents 100 percent of a
whole, while the pie “slices” represent portions of a whole.

How Much Water Do We Use?

Others

The pie chart above shows water usage. As you can see, toilet water
usage is the greatest as shown in the slice that is relative to the data being
presented in the pie.

It is not so hard, is it? You just have to get the data presented in the pie
and interpret it by answering corresponding questions or by writing
paragraphs.

4
Let Us Practice

Are you ready for some exercises? Presented in the pie graph below is
John’s favorite type of movie. Analyze the data presented by answering the
corresponding questions.

3. Which one is his least favorite?

4. If John is to choose whether action or comedy, what do you think will
he prefer to watch?

__________________________________________________________

5. What types of movie does he equally prefer to watch?

__________________________________________________________

Let Us Practice More

Did you get the concept? Let’s have another pie graph to analyze.
Earlier, you were able to analyze John’s favorite type of movie. This time
analyze another graph about the expenses of an average Filipino family.
Afterwards, answer the corresponding questions.

2. Which of these expenses receives the largest share? Which one receives
the least?

3. What two items receive the same share of expenses?

___________________________________________________________

4. What does this show you about the priorities in an average Filipino
family?
___________________________________________________________

5. How would the poor and well-to-do itemize their expenses?

__________________________________________________________

Let Us Remember

While there are other types of graphs, you must remember the
specific purpose of using pie graphs. It is important to remember that pie
graphs are useful only for comparing proportions, that is looking at parts of a
whole. If you are interested on other aspects such as trends or frequencies,
then other types of graphs or charts may be more appropriate.

7
Let Us Assess

In this part of the lesson, you will be assessed on how well you
understand the lesson from the discussion and exercises presented above.
Are you ready? Let’s begin!

Picture yourself as the business manager of your class. Your class

president gave you P500.00 and you were tasked to prepare a project using
the amount. Present this in a pie graph by indicating the percentage of the
budget needed for the project. Slice the pie below by drawing lines to show
your answer. Afterwards, answer the following questions.

1. How many items or things do you need to make the project based on
the allocated amount?

8
2. Which of these items would need the largest share of amount? Which
one gets least?

3. Are there items that would receive the same share?

Explain your answer.

Let Us Enhance

Great job finishing the assessment part. Now we are on the last part
of this lesson. This time you are going to make a pie graph that reflects your
day-to-day life as a student. Do you know how to properly allocate budget for
your allowance? By making a pie graph, you should be able to learn how to
budget your allowance. Slice the pie below by writing lines. Answer these
questions so that you will have a guide on making your pie graph:

1. What are your expenses in school?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

2. How much allowance must you have to your school needs?

3. Prior to this lesson, were you able to appropriately allocate budget on

your allowance?

answer.

Let Us Reflect

Congratulations on accomplishing this activity sheet! You have gained

another learning experience even being at home.
Learning how to budget our allowances in school is a tough task for
students at your age considering that there are lots of things you want to buy
to satisfy and entertain yourself. However, to be a responsible young student,
you must learn how to be thrifty. You need to distinguish between what you
need and what you want and have a rational judgment what to buy and what
not to buy. This lesson greatly helps you to wisely spend your money. Look at
every part of a whole. Always remember that successful people know how to
spend their money according to what they need. It always starts on the little
things. So as a student, spend your allowance wisely and you will be
successful someday.
Continue to have fun while you learn!
