Career Description

Dietitians are healthcare professionals who specialize in

the use of food and nutrition to promote health and manage
disease. They assess clients' nutritional needs, provide
counseling, develop meal plans, and monitor the effects of
nutrition strategies. Dietitians work to help individuals prevent
or manage health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and
obesity through personalized nutrition advice.

Their duties include evaluating clients' health through

nutrition assessments and laboratory tests, offering tailored
dietary recommendations, and making adjustments as needed.
Dietitians work in various settings such as hospitals, clinics,
and private practices, where they create customized nutritional
programs to improve health and wellbeing.

Clinical dietitians, a key subset, focus on providing

medical nutrition therapy for clients with specific health
conditions. They work closely with other healthcare professionals
to coordinate care and ensure clients receive the most effective
dietary interventions.

as may be prescribed by the Board; Provided, That within three
years after approval of this decree, graduates of Nutrition and
Dietetics who have undergone dietetic internship may be admitted
to the Board. To become a licensed dietitian in the Philippines,
individuals must complete a series of educational qualifications,
practical training, and exams. Below is the step-by-step process:

1. Education:

The first step is to complete a Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

in Nutrition and Dietetics. This is the foundational academic
requirement and provides students with comprehensive knowledge in
food science, nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, public health
nutrition, food safety, and food service management. The program
prepares students to assess, manage, and promote healthy eating
habits to prevent or treat medical conditions through diet.

Alternatively, some students may pursue a Bachelor of

Science in Food and Nutrition. This degree focuses on the
scientific principles of food and nutrition, emphasizing their
role in health and disease prevention. While it offers similar
training to the B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics, the curriculum
may differ slightly depending on the institution, offering more
focus on food production, nutrition education, and public health
nutrition.

2. Practical Training (Internship):

After completing the academic portion of their studies,

students are required to undergo practical training in various
specialized areas. These training modules are essential for
gaining hands-on experience. The practical training includes:

 Public Health Nutrition (250 hours): Students work with

communities to promote healthy eating habits and improve
overall public health. This training includes developing and
implementing nutrition programs, conducting nutrition
assessments, and addressing issues like malnutrition and
food insecurity.
 Food Service (150 hours): Students gain practical experience
in managing food service systems. This training includes
meal planning, food preparation, food safety, and managing
kitchen operations in institutional settings such as
schools, hospitals, or large-scale catering services.
 Hospital Dietetics (200 hours): This training focuses on
medical nutrition therapy in clinical settings. Students
learn to assess the nutritional needs of patients, develop
personalized diet plans, and monitor patients’ progress in
treating conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart
disease.

These internships must be completed on a Full-Time Basis (FTB),

ensuring that students immerse themselves fully in these critical
areas without distractions from other commitments.

3. Licensure Exam:

After completing their degree and practical training,

students must pass the Licensure Examination for Dietitians,
administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). The
exam tests students’ knowledge and skills in various areas,
ensuring they are qualified to practice as dietitians in the
Philippines.

Why This Career Is Important in Modern Society:

Dietitians play an essential role in modern society by

promoting health and well-being through proper nutrition. As
lifestyle diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular
disease, continue to rise, dietitians are crucial in preventing
and managing these conditions through dietary interventions. They
provide personalized nutrition advice to individuals and
communities, helping them make sustainable food choices that lead
to long-term health improvements.
