2.2 CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESFUL STUDENTS

1. Attendance is the key – College students must have the effort to go to class
regularly because it’s vital for academic success. When you attend each class,
you’ll be in a better position to fully understand the topic you’re learning.
2. Put your best foot forward – It means open to new ideas. You have to keep in your
mind that you can learn a lot of new ideas and concepts as you attend the class.
3. Ask for help – The professors always open their hands to their students to ask
about any materials they’re having trouble understanding or ask questions about
what they’re learning.
4. Have a balanced social life – It’s important to students to still have fun with a well-
balanced lifestyle with responsibility and discipline principle in their life.
5. Self-motivated – A successful student motivates themselves to do their work. They
use their own goals to motivate them in college life.
6. Be risk takers – We push beyond our limits just to achieve the benefits we want in
studies.

2.4 LEARNING STYLE INVENTORY

Did you know what is learning style inventory? Learning style refers to the preferred way
that you acquire, process, and retain information the way you learn best. There are three types
of learning style inventory which are visual learners, auditory learners and kinaesthetic learners.
We as a student have to identify our own learning style inventors for example my learning style
inventory is visual learners. By understanding what kind of learner you are, you can gain a better
perspective on how to implement these learning styles into your lesson plans and study
techniques.

6.0 MEMORY, LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

6.1 Understanding Memory Process

Memory is the ability to remember past experiences, and the power or process of
recalling to mind previously learned facts, experiences, impressions, skills and habits.
Also, ‘having a good memory’ involves both putting information into memory and getting
it back out by both storage retrieval.

6.2 Information Processing Model

Memory is complex and consists of various processes and stages.

6.3 Types Of Memory

o Sensory Memory
If one pays attention to the stimuli, it will go to the short-term memory
(STM). If one does not pay attention, then the information will be lost.

o Short Term Memory

Has two components which is immediate memory and working memory.
Immediate memory is the ability to remember a small amount of

P a g e 14 | 20

Downloaded by CHESSRIEN CHUA ([email protected])

lOMoARcPSD|48736854

information over a few seconds. Lastly, working memory is a system for

temporarily storing and managing the information required to carry out
complex cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and comprehension.

o Long term Memory

Unlimited and large storage. Also, Information knowledge can be stored for
long periods. From STM, inf formation moved to LTM and stored here for
later use (retrieval). If the information is not being used for some time,
forgetting may occur.

6.4 Memory Strategies

How forgetting could occur:-

- Did not pay attention to the information
- Did not understand the information
- Cramming (last minute study)
- Did not have good strategies
- Interference (having 2 exams on the same day especially if the subjects are closely
related for example psychology and counseling)
- Test anxiety (negative thoughts about oneself, did not prepare well for the test)

6.5 How To Improve your memory?

 Massed practice vs spaced practice
 Break reading material down (again no cramming) for some period of time
 Rehearsal - repeat the information many times
 Elaboration strategies:
- Associations
- Acronyms
- Acrostics
- Imagery-visualize the image of the information needed
- Organizational strategies
- Comprehension monitoring strategies

6.6 Strategies For Improving Concentration

P a g e 15 | 20

Downloaded by CHESSRIEN CHUA ([email protected])

lOMoARcPSD|48736854

- Concentration is focusing your attention on what you are doing.

- Causes of poor concentration:
o Lack of attention
o Lack of interest
o Lack of motivation
o Distraction from others
o Uncomfortable environment
o Physiological matters- illness, tiredness
o Physiological matters- personal problems, worries, anxieties
7.0 TAKING LECTURE NOTES

7.1 Why Take Lecture Notes?

Only 10 percent of an audio lecture may last in memory, but students who take and
review their notes can recall about 80% of a lecture. Research suggests that physical writing
activates, regions of the brain that involve thinking, language and working memory.

o Promotes active listening by helping you concentrate on the lecture

o Provides an accurate record of information that was presented in class
o Helps you can learn and remember the information
o Helps you to organize the information

7.2 How To Take Lecture Notes?

o Learning to take notes effectively takes time

o Prepare before taking notes
o Read the text assignment before class
- Can build up some background about the topic
- Will give you the opportunity to become familiar with the main topics that will be
Presented
o Become an active listener
- Active listener are physically and mentally focused on the lecture
