our neighboring town, Lucban, Quezon. According to my friend who
resides in the said town, the alleged person who tested positive is a
medical professional who attended to a deceased patient. I am
worried about my relatives who live there. I hope they are fine."
Mario: "Because earlier today, April 4, 2021, I have read some news
from inquirer.net published by news correspondent Delfin T. Mallari
Jr. Based on the article, the Municipal Health Office of Lucban had
clarified the said issue. According to them, the mayor only wanted to
quote one of the medical professionals who attended to the deceased
patient that there is a big possibility that it was caused by a UK
variant, but there is no confirmatory test performed yet. They have
also added that they are already trying to process a genome
sequencing of a direct contact of the late patient and the local chief
executive only wanted the residents to be vigilant and safe.
After reading the statements, instruct each group to discuss and answer the
following process questions:
1. Which statements are more convincing? Clara’s or Mario’s?
2. What helped you decide which statement is more convincing?
3. What do you think is the impact of unconfirmed information spreading
online?
4. What do you suggest to readers or listeners?
B. ANALYSIS :
Now that you know the different tips on how to spot factual and truthful
information, let us verify your answers on the first activity.
Let’s do the fact check by accomplishing the table below.
Put a check on the corresponding box for each item if it was clearly provided by the

truthful ideas.
Source
Supporting Details (READ BEYOND)
Author
Supporting Sources
Date
CONSIDER THE SOURCE: Investigate the site you are viewing or reading.
READ BEYOND: Headlines can be outrageous in an effort to get clicks, so you
should focus on the whole story. You have to read and look for details such as
statistics, date, name, etc.
CHECK THE AUTHOR: Do a quick search on the author to find out if they are
real and credible.
VERIFY SUPPORTING SOURCES: Determine if the given information actually
supports the story.
CHECK THE DATE: Reposting old news stories does not mean they’re relevant
to current events. It should be updated.
CHECK YOUR BIASES: Consider if your own beliefs could affect your judgment.
ABSTRACTION:
1. What makes an idea or information relevant to a particular topic?
2. How can you determine if the information is truthful or not?
3. Which statement provides a specific source for the information?
4. Which statement provides more detailed information beyond just the
headline?
5. Which statement identifies the author of the information?
6. Which statement mentions supporting sources to back up the information?
7. Which statement provides a specific date for when the information was
obtained?
8. How might personal biases affect the judgment of Clara's and Mario's
statements?
1. APPLICATION:
Task: Create a Simple Presentation or Poster:
Students will create a presentation or poster to evaluate the statement from
the Municipal Health Office of Lucban. They will focus on the relevance, logic,
and effectiveness of the ideas presented.
Step 1: Read the Statements:
"According to the Municipal Health Office of Lucban, the mayor's announcement
about the possible presence of the COVID UK variant in the town was not confirmed
by a genome sequencing test. The health office clarified that the mayor's statement
was intended to raise awareness and encourage vigilance among residents. They
also mentioned that a genome sequencing test is being processed to verify the
information."
