QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

Question 1
Given the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 5.
a) Find the factors of 𝑓(𝑥)
b) Solve 𝑓(𝑥) = 0
c) Find the turning point of 𝑓(𝑥). Hence sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥).
Question 2
a) Find the value of 𝑚 if 3𝑥 2 − 𝑚𝑥 + 12 = 0 has equal roots.
b) Show that the roots of the equation 𝑚𝑥 2 + (𝑚 + 𝑛)𝑥 + 𝑛 = 0 are real for all value
of 𝑚 and 𝑛 where 𝑚 and 𝑛 ∈ ℜ .

Question 3
Given the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 3 − 𝑥 − 3𝑥 2 .
a) Write the function in the form 𝑓(𝑥) = −3(𝑥 + 𝑚)2 + 𝑛 where 𝑚 and 𝑛 are real
numbers
b) Find the values of 𝑚 and 𝑛.
c) Solve 𝑓(𝑥) = 0 by completing the squares.
d) Find the turning point of 𝑓(𝑥). Hence sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥).
Question 4

a) If 𝛼 and 𝛽 are the roots of the equation 9𝑥 2 − 13𝑥 + 4 = 0 , find the value of:
i. 𝛼+𝛽
ii. 𝛼𝛽
iii. (𝛼 + 2)(𝛽 + 2).
b) If 𝛼 and 𝛽 are the roots of the equation 6𝑥 2 − 13𝑥 − 3 = 0, form an equation
whose roots are; 𝛼 − 1 , 𝛽 − 1.
a) Let 𝑓(𝑥) = 5 − 2𝑥 − 3𝑥 2 , find:
i. the zero(s) of 𝑓(𝑥), [𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑠, 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑓(𝑥) = 0]
ii. the value of the turning point of 𝑓(𝑥)
iii. Sketch the graph of 𝑓(𝑥).

Question 5

a) A farmer having 𝑡𝑤𝑜 ℎ𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑦 metres of fencing wishes to contain his dairy
cows in a rectangular plot of land along a hill. Assuming that no fencing is needed
along a hill which is following a straight line;
i. Write an equation in terms of 𝑥 the area of the rectangular plot.
ii. Find the dimensions of the rectangular plot to provide the dairy cows with
maximum grazing land. Hence, find the value of the maximum area.
b) Let 𝛼 and 𝛽 be the roots of the equation 3𝑥 2 − (𝑚 − 4)𝑥 + (2𝑚 + 1) = 0. Find:
i. the value of 𝑚 for which the equation 3𝑥 2 − (𝑚 − 4)𝑥 + (2𝑚 + 1) = 0 has
equal root.
ii. the form of the quadratic equation whose roots are 𝛼(𝛼 − 1) & 𝛽(𝛽 − 1).

Question 6
The equation of the curve 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 − 5.
i. Solve 𝑓(𝑥) = 0
ii. If 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎(𝑥 + 𝑏)2 + 𝑐, find the constants 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐. Hence, deduce the
coordinates of the turning point of the curve.
iii. Sketch the graph of 𝑓(𝑥).
Question 7
Let 𝛼 and 𝛽 be the roots of the equation 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 3 = 0. Find:
i. the sum 𝛼 2 + 𝛽 2
ii. the form of the quadratic equation whose roots are 𝛼(𝛼 − 1) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝛽(𝛽 −
1).
iii. The value of (𝛼 + 2)(𝛽 + 2).
Question 8

a) The polynomial 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 is divided by 𝑥 − 1, has remainder 2 when divided


by 𝑥 + 1 and has remainder 8 when divided by 𝑥 − 2. Find the values of 𝑎, 𝑏
and 𝑐.
b) Calculate the exact value(s) of q for which the equation 𝑞𝑥 2 (𝑞 + 2)𝑥 + 3 = 0 has
repeated roots.
c) Let 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 𝑝𝑥 + 𝑝 + 3. Find 𝑝 such that 𝑓(𝑥) = 0 has equal roots.
d) Let 𝛼 and 𝛽 be the roots of the equation 3𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 9 = 0. Find:
