Project 1 Teacher’s notes Free time survey report
Aims: To give students the opportunity to work on KEY

• Divide the class into pairs.
• Ask them to brainstorm in their pairs as many
different free-time activities as they can think of.
• Elicit ideas and write them on the board in a
spidergram. Check the meaning of ‘popular’ with
the class. Ask the students which free-time activity
they think is the most popular.
• Give one handout to each pair of students and
ask them to read the survey report and answer
questions 1–4.
• Tell students to read the instructions for exercise 2.
Check they understand the instructions. Examples
of places they could choose include cinema,
theatre, sports stadium, leisure centre, shopping
centre, beach, park, museum, etc.
• Make sure they understand that they should
choose a specific theatre or park for example – they
need to be real places.
• Tell them to use the internet to research the places
and answer questions 1–6 about each place so they
can write three profiles.
• OPTION 1: With a stronger group, you could elicit
further questions to help them find out more
information in their research.
• Give them a time limit for their research and
encourage them to work together as a pair.
• When they are ready, students interview each other.
It is best if half the students present their profiles
first and the others are the interviewees, then they
swap roles.
• Ask pairs of students to work together again to
discuss their interview results and see which places
were the most popular and why.
• OPTION 2: With a stronger group, you could ask
them to write a short report to read aloud or display
around the room.
• Conduct a class discussion about the report
findings, especially anything surprising.
