Prerequisite -
Objectives To understand some basic concepts of research and its methodologies.
To identify appropriate research topics.
To select and define appropriate research problem and parameters.
To organize and conduct research (advanced project) in a more appropriate
manner.
To be able to write a research report and thesis effectively.
Outcomes Will be able to effectively conduct literature survey and identify a
contemporary research topic.
Will have capability to formulate a research problem and ascertain the extent
and scope for future applications.
Have knowledge of analysis, testing approaches and statistical tools to
conduct high quality research.
Develop ability to prepare a scientific research report for paper presentation
and publication.
Capability to prepare comprehensive summary of research findings as a
thesis for evaluation.
Will conduct ethical research and maintain sanctity of global research
standards.
UNIT 1 Introduction to Research Methodology Hours : 12
Research Objectives, Motivation, Types, Defining the Research Problem, Research Design and its need -
Development of working hypothesis. Importance of literature review in defining a problem - Primary and
Secondary sources, Reviews, Monograph, Patents, Research databases, Web as a source, Searching the
web, Critical literature review, Identifying gap areas from literature and Research database.
UNIT 2 Sampling Design, Measurement and Data Collection Hours : 12
Sampling Design: Census and Sample Surveys – Errors, types. Measurement and Scaling Techniques –Data
types, Classification of Measurement scales, Errors, Techniques. Measurement Scaling techniques,
Multidimensional scaling. Data Collection- Collection of Primary Data & Secondary Data, Selection of
Appropriate Data. Data Preparation process- Editing, Cleaning, Adjusting and Analysis.
UNIT 3 Data Statistics ,Testing of hypothesis & Analysis of Hours : 12
Variance
Data Statistics- Measures of Central tendency, Dispersion, Skewness, Kurtosis, Relationships, Attributes & other
measures. Sampling – Sampling distribution, Degrees of freedom, Central Limit Theorem, Statistical Inference.
Testing of hypothesis – Basic concepts, Testing of Mean, Proportion & Variance. Analysis of variance – Basic
principles of ANOVA, One way ANOVA.
UNIT 4 Regression, Discriminant & Cluster Analysis Hours : 12
Linear Regression analysis – Simple & Multiple linear regression models. Factor Analysis – Basis, Merits and
Demerits. Discriminant Analysis – Methodology, Assumptions. Cluster Analysis – Algorithms. Other
Multivariate Techniques – Classifications. Case study related to area of research.
UNIT 5 Academic Writing & Presentation Hours : 12
Report Writing- Meaning of Interpretation - Techniques, Precautions, Significance of Report Writing- Steps
Involved, Layout of the Research Report, Types, Oral Presentation. Communication skills, Tailoring the
presentation to the target audience – Oral presentations, Poster preparations, Submission of research. Oral
Communication skills and Oral defence. Research ethics and plagiarism.
