COMPUTING PHYSICAL THEORY

INPUT DEVICESA piece of hardware that transfers data from the outside world to the
computer
PERIPHERAL DEVICEa device connected to the computer through input and output
controllers they do not affect the actual primary function of the system architecture

Common input devices you should know:

 Keyboard
 Mouse

There are pointers with a tracker ball compared to a mouse these

take less desk space as they remain stationary

 Tracker pad
 Graphics tablet
 Microphone
 Flatbed scanner
 OMR scanner
 Magnetic stripe card reader
 Smart card reader
 NFC reader
 Touchscreen

Used in smartwatches, mobile phones and tablets

Interactive whiteboards(useful as manual notes can be taken in

front of a whole class then saved)
Deciding on a device is dependent on:
Cost
Speed
Accuracy
Reliability
SCREENS
-LCD,OLED and LED are the three types
A-LEVEL INPUT DEVICES THAT YOU NEED COMPREHENSIVE NOTES ON:
BIOMETRIC TECHNIQUES

SENSORS

DIGITAL CAMERA

RFID

BARCODE READERS
First started appearing in supermarkets in the 1970s now are continued to be
used in many other scenarios
Identification in thousands of applications, tracking parcels, blood ,tissue and
organ products, record of people attending an event
Allows a very accurate track of anything
TWO TYPES OF BARCODE: the linear barcode vs the QR(Quick Response)
barcode
QR code is 2D meaning it holds more information than the linear barcode
which is 1D
QR codes can be read in many directions(horizontally, vertically etc) linear
barcodes can only be read in one direction
QR codes used in entries to festivals, concerts ,passenger airlines, trains and
most of all on mobile apps and services to direct it to a URL giving more details
In barcodes the black and white sections refer to different binary numbers
which can then be identified

TYPES OF BARCODE SYSTEMS(in linear barcodes)

 UNIVERSAL PRODUCT CODE version A (UPC-A)
Used in retail and warehousing
Can only represent numerical digits
Represents 12 digits

 CODE 128
Used in transport and shipment tracking
Can represent letters and numbers(alphanumeric)
can encompass the whole ASCII character set

TYPES OF BARCODE SCANNERS

PEN-TYPE READERS
-the tip of the pen reader is dragged across the barcode at an even speed
-at the tip is a light source and a diode
-the light source shines and as the barcode is read the diode measures
intensity of light reflected
-this generates
LASER SCANNERS

CAMERA BASED READERS

DIGITAL CAMERAS
