Case study question 6

OA, OB, OC, OD, OE and OF are six roads and all join at a point ‘O’. These roads make angles a, b, c,
d and e according to the figure. Roads OD and OE are perpendicular to each other. AD and CF are
straight lines and intersect each other at ‘O’. If a : b :c are in the ratio 2 :3 : 4. A teacher showed this
figure to all the students and asked the following questions.

In a forest, a big tree got broken due to heavy rain and wind. Due to this rain the big branches AB and AC
with lengths 5m fell down on the ground. Branch AC makes an angle of 30° with the main tree AP. The
distance of Point B from P is 4 m. You can observe that ∆ABP is congruent to ∆ACP.

A group of students decided to make a project on Statistics. They are collecting the heights (in cm)
of their 51 girls of Class IX-A, B and C of their school. After collecting the data, they arranged the
data in the following frequency distribution table form:
Height (in cm) 135 – 140 140 – 145 145 – 150 150 – 155 155 – 160
160 – 165
Number of girls 4 7 18 11 6

(ii) How many students of the height 150 cm and below are there?
(iii) How many students of the height 145 cm and above are there?

Case study question 9

Triangles are used in bridges because they evenly distribute weight without changing their proportions.
When force is applied on a shape like a rectangle it would flatten out. Before triangles were used in bridges,
they were weak and could not be very big. To solve that problem engineers would put a post in the middle of
a square and make it more sturdy. Isosceles triangles were used to construct a bridge in which the base
(unequal side) of an isosceles triangle is 4 m and its perimeter is 20 m.

(i) What is the length of equal sides?

(ii) In a ∆, it is given that base = 12 m and height = 5 m. Find its area.
(iii) What is the area of the given isosceles triangle?
